Understanding “Small t” Trauma: Why It Matters
When we think of trauma, we often picture major life-altering events—what’s known as “Big T” trauma, such as abuse, violence, or catastrophic loss. But there’s another form of trauma that can be just as impactful over time: “small t” trauma.
Small t trauma refers to less obvious, yet deeply distressing experiences that may not seem “traumatic” on the surface—but still leave emotional wounds. These can include things like:
• Ongoing criticism or emotional neglect
• Divorce or breakups
• Bullying
• Job loss
• Medical issues
• Feeling unseen, unheard, or unsupported
These experiences may not be life-threatening, but they are life-altering. They can shape how we see ourselves, relate to others, and navigate the world. And because they’re often minimized or dismissed, many people carry the pain silently—wondering why they feel anxious, sad, or stuck.
If this resonates with you, please know: your pain is valid. Healing doesn’t require your trauma to meet a certain “threshold.” If it hurt you, it matters. Therapy can help untangle those experiences and move toward healing and self-compassion.
