Understanding “Small t” Trauma: Why It Matters

When we think of trauma, we often picture major life-altering events—what’s known as “Big T” trauma, such as abuse, violence, or catastrophic loss. But there’s another form of trauma that can be just as impactful over time: “small t” trauma.

Small t trauma refers to less obvious, yet deeply distressing experiences that may not seem “traumatic” on the surface—but still leave emotional wounds. These can include things like:
• Ongoing criticism or emotional neglect
• Divorce or breakups
• Bullying
• Job loss
• Medical issues
• Feeling unseen, unheard, or unsupported

These experiences may not be life-threatening, but they are life-altering. They can shape how we see ourselves, relate to others, and navigate the world. And because they’re often minimized or dismissed, many people carry the pain silently—wondering why they feel anxious, sad, or stuck.

If this resonates with you, please know: your pain is valid. Healing doesn’t require your trauma to meet a certain “threshold.” If it hurt you, it matters. Therapy can help untangle those experiences and move toward healing and self-compassion.

You don’t have to go through it alone. Call or text me at 713-533-9811.

The Stages of Grief Model Does Not Apply to Mourners!

Most people don’t know that the five stages of grief—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—were created for terminally ill patients facing their own mortality, NOT for those mourning a loved one!

Grief doesn't follow a neat timeline; it's a chaotic mix of emotions that can hit you unexpectedly. Each person's experience is unique, shaped by their relationship with the deceased and the circumstances of the loss.

Don’t navigate this difficult time alone. Reach out today and discover the support you need to process your grief in a safe and understanding environment. Let me help you find peace amidst the chaos of your emotions.

Overcoming Anxiety by Staying Present

Focusing on the future often creates anxiety—worrying about what might happen, rehearsing worst-case scenarios, or feeling overwhelmed by the unknown. But the truth is, the future isn’t here yet. The only place we can truly live, breathe, and find peace is in the present moment.

When you feel anxiety creeping in, try this:

✨ Focus on your body—this will return you to the present quickly because your body is always in the present.
✨ Ground yourself—notice what you see, hear, and feel right now.
✨ Breathe deeply—slow, intentional breaths can calm your nervous system.

You are stronger than your anxious thoughts. They are not facts, just passing clouds in the sky of your mind. Stay here, in this moment!

Seeking therapy after experiencing trauma is essential for healing and long-term well-being. Trauma can deeply impact the mind and body, often leading to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, emotional numbness, and difficulty trusting others. Without proper support, these effects can persist, interfering with daily life and relationships. Therapy provides a safe space to process painful experiences, regulate emotions, and develop healthy coping strategies. A skilled therapist can help reframe negative beliefs, reduce distress, and empower individuals to regain a sense of control and resilience. Addressing trauma through therapy not only fosters healing but also prevents it from shaping one’s future in harmful ways. I have more than 20 years experience helping people heal their traumatic experiences. Call or text me at 713-533-9811. I'd like to help.

Should I be over it by now?

Many people believe that grief has a set timeline and that after a certain period—whether weeks, months, or even a year—someone should be “back to normal.” In reality, grief is not something to “get over” but rather something we learn to carry in different ways over time. It can ebb and flow, resurface unexpectedly, and change shape as we grow. There is no deadline for healing, and each person’s journey is unique.

If you need help processing your grief, text or call me at (713) 533-9811. I would feel privileged to help.

Grief is a deeply personal and often unpredictable experience with emotions fluctuating, overlapping, or recurring over time. Each person’s relationship to loss is shaped by their unique personality, life circumstances, cultural background, and support system. Recognizing that grief does not follow a neat progression allows for greater compassion and understanding, creating space for people to process their feelings in their own way and at their own pace. If you are experiencing difficulty living with grief, I would be privileged to help you. Call or text me at 713-533-9811.

Anniversary dates can be especially tender for those who are grieving. Whether it’s the anniversary of a loved one’s passing, a birthday, or another significant milestone, these days often bring a flood of memories, emotions, and reflections.

It’s important to give yourself permission to feel whatever comes up. Grief is deeply personal, and there’s no “right” way to honor these moments. You might choose to:
• Reflect quietly or journal your thoughts.
• Light a candle or visit a meaningful place.
• Share memories with loved ones.
• Engage in an act of kindness or charity in their honor.

Whatever you choose, remember to extend yourself grace. These moments can be bittersweet, and it’s okay to feel sadness and joy simultaneously.

You are not alone in this journey. Reach out if you need support—I am here to help.
