What happens when a brain injury occurs? When the brain is injured, swelling can cause it to take up more space inside the skull, increasing pressure. This can lead to bruising or blood clots, and in some cases, blocked cerebrospinal fluid, causing the brain’s spaces to expand.

Increased intracranial pressure is a major concern, as it can prevent blood from reaching brain tissue, leading to further damage. A traumatic brain injury also can disrupt the brain’s chemical balance, affecting how neurons communicate. This can result in changes to thinking, behavior, and overall brain function, though recovery often happens as the brain stabilizes.

These changes can lead to confusion or agitation. In severe cases, brain injury may cause issues with speech, vision, or muscle strength.

In honor of Social Work Month and Women’s History Month, we are proud to spotlight Davida, our incredible Case Manager and Social Worker at ClearSky Baytown.

Davida was inspired to pursue social work after witnessing the compassion and dedication of a hospice social worker who cared for one of her family members at home. That moment left a lasting impact and sparked a passion for helping others during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

As a lifelong resident of the Baytown area, Davida finds great joy in serving the community she knows so well. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is watching patients transform—from depending on others for care to regaining their independence through therapy and returning home to their families.

Her coworkers describe her as resourceful, knowledgeable, and intentional.

Davida believes social work is more than just a career; it is a calling. Her advice to future social workers is simple but powerful: choose this profession for the outcome, not just the income.

Her life is best represented by the song “Overcomer” by Mandisa. Over a ten-year period, Davida battled and beat cancer, lost close family members, supported her husband through open-heart surgery, cared for three children who faced serious illnesses, and experienced flooding in her home during a hurricane. During that same time, she also returned to school to complete both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees after years of raising her children and supporting her husband as a pastor.

Thank you, Davida, for the strength, compassion, and dedication you bring to ClearSky Baytown and to every patient you serve.

Jana came to ClearSky Baytown with bilateral lower extremity weakness and COPD, determined to get stronger and regain her independence.

By the time she was nearing discharge, she was walking through the halls so confidently that you could easily mistake her for a visitor rather than a patient. Her energy, humor, and wonderful stories made every therapy session a joy for our team.

We’re grateful to have been part of your recovery, Jana. Thank you for bringing so much laughter and positivity to our gym. You will always be part of the ClearSky Baytown family!
