This salad screams SPRING! The leafy greens, the pears and the cured meat are saying that spring is in full swing. How?

Let's begin with pears. This fruit is actually at the very end of its peak in spring. We have many varieties of pears and the trees begin to fruit in August or September and keep giving fruit until January, March or April depending on the pear type.

Walnuts are generally harvested in the fall between September and November - oh and they are not REALLY nuts. They are technically a stone fruit and the edible seed is the walnut. Historically, fall harvest is what people eat through the winter months and the beginning of spring.

Similarly, the meat of the animals slaughtered in the fall were cured and consumed through the cold months and finished off during the spring.

Finally, the leafy greens, my favorite and most nutritionally dense part of this meal, are abundantly available in the spring and summer, mashaAllah. The baby varieties will always be much sweeter. The older the leaf, the more bitter so choose according to your taste!

You may be wondering why I'm going on about the season for the ingredients in the recipes I share and that is because Allah created everything perfectly with so much love for our very own benefit. So that we can thrive and achieve our human potential. In the hotter months, cooler foods become available, in the colder months, more heating foods become available and the nutrition they contain is exactly what we need at that time, Alhamdullilah. Did you know that avocados have more potassium than bananas? Well now you know! This fruit can be found pretty much year-round due to importation, but eating out of season isn't actually good for your overall health. This is a big reason why I advocate eating locally. It isn't just about the environmental footprint of importing, but about eating what is available at its peak to ensure your body gets everything that it needs for optimal mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing.

The way I see it is, if Allah wanted us to have something all year round, he would make it so. Some climates allow for full year availability, and that is what people who live in those lands require for optimal performance. Allah's wisdom is beyond our comprehension!

So back to the yummy food lol, this is super simple to put together and requires zero cooking (unless you make your own bread, but usually that's made ahead of time) and perfect for those who need time efficiency in their lives. This is a favorite with the kids in my house. Feta is a good substitute if you don't have goat cheese :) Enjoy and let me know what you think!

A rule of thumb for me during Ramadan (and really always, but since we are in the spirit right now lol) is to ensure that everything that goes in my body, packs a powerful nutrition punch, is easy to make and saves time.

This refreshing pudding can be made while you sleep and it will be ready to go for both suhoor or iftaar. The recipe calls for soy protein for those who don't take dairy, but I prefer whey isolate whenever possible :) It is creamier.

Matcha is loaded with antioxidants, sharpens your focus and boosts your immune system. It is perfect to get you through taraweeh prayers or stay up after fajr, plus that added protein makes it a meal replacement if you wish.

Modern farming practices make this fish (and many others) available year-round, but at the cost of 1) the animal's welfare 2) the quality of nutrition 3) our environment and eco system. If you don't have a way to get it fresh, most grocery stores do have wild caught options, so read your labels!

On to the best part, eating it lol. Try this simple salmon spring roll next time you go on a picnic. It's simple to make and packs very well for a nice outing :D If you have peanut sauce available, use that instead of the soy sauce, it goes well with it too!

My favorite is whey protein ISOLATE from grass-fed cows. It makes any smoothie super creamy. If you can't have dairy, the next best thing in my opinion is pea protein. Try this recipe and let me know what you think!

Not only do they add great flavor to the simplest of dishes, but it is a way of preserving the lovely summer fruit (or vegetable lol). If we didn't have these preservation practices, we'd miss out the rest of the year!

Potatoes are also vegetable from another season. They are harvested in the fall, right before the first frost and they last for MONTHS when stored in a cool, dry area. The potatoes being sold right now in Spring, are likely from last fall 🙂

All that aside, enjoy this yummy salad that keeps well in the fridge for a quick side to your favorite protein, or by itself as a meal.

I like to leave the heavier proteins like meat and fish for dinner, because they take longer to digest which provides you with satiety for a longer period of time.

And if you are a no breakfast person like me, it takes you further into the next day!

What I love about simple ingredients is that, substitutions can be found easier too. For instance, in the case of bulgur, one can easily use quinoa or millet with the same seasonings 🙂

Anytime anyone in my house cooks, they HAVE to make sure it can feed at least one other person, preferably everyone - if food tolerances permit.

This will save somebody in the house a good amount of time, allowing them to cross out something pending from their to-do. Everyone wins!

Personally, I prefer to make my own condiments and sauces, and when I do, I make them in bulk. So when I'm in a crunch, I can just dollop a couple of spoonfuls into a quick salad. If you don't have your own, you can always find them pre-made 🙂 Enjoy! ❤
