Here's the Artist's Conk Ganoderma applanatum. This related to other Reishi, and has similar health benefits, but that stark white underside will immediately stain brown when scored. Folks have scribed art on this surface for centuries. This particular one didn't make it home with me. I left it to keep growing, and someone else got it before me. Lesson here: seize the day and grab that fungus when the grabbing is good.

It's been a minute since I posted. The week was busy and got away from me. This is a little different of a post today. Firstly was the tarot spread I laid out before the North Shore Wellness Expo followed by my table setup from the event. I was well stocked from goodies from MN Nice Ethnobotanicals and had a lovely partner at the table with Josie Bray. Super great time, will do again!

This is happening in 2 DAYS! Please come on out to the North Shore Wellness Expo to chat with Josie Bray and The Mushroom Witch of Boston at our shared table. She's gonna be talking about somatic practices, and I'll be talking about mushies. I'll have some offerings kindly provided by MN Nice Ethnobotanicals for sale!

The beautiful wood blewit, Clitocybe nuda, is an example of how ephemeral and quick the life of a fruiting body is. These start off a beautiful purple color, which quickly fades to grey, and then brown. They're considered an edible, so long as it's not confused with Cortinarius violaceus, when which is deadly poisonous.

Hen of the Woods, Grifola frondosa, though similar in name to Chicken of the Woods, gets her name for a different reason. Chickens taste like chicken, makes sense. Hens get their names because they look like the breast feathers of a hen. Considered a choice edible, maybe even more than chickens, they get pretty HUGE, as you can see in the last shot.

Orange Jelly Fungus, Dacrymyces chrysospermus, is this friend. Also called Witch's butter. This jelly grows on dead hardwoods, and is quite the attention grabber.

Here we have some good examples of Honey Mushrooms, Armillaria family. This variety has a ring, or annulus, around the stipe, seen here. They're a virulent parasite, and spell certain death for the trees they infect, but they're also considered a desired edible.

I am BEYOND excited to announce that I have partnered with MN Nice Ethnobotanicals to sell their fine wares here locally. I've been using their offerings for over a year now, and they're high quality and available in the times when Amanita muscaria is not popping up.

The puffballs are out right now! This is a common earthball Scleroderma citrinum. As they grow larger, the puffy insides turn this beautiful grey color, before something smashes them and releases the spores into the world. Some are edible, some are poisonous, all are fun to go puff!

Chicken of the Woods, Laetiporus sulphureus! This polypore mushroom is easily identifiable from its color, and abundant, shelf-like brackets that grow on dead or dying wood. Being a polypore, they don't have gills, and this one has a white to yellow pore surface. Considered a choice edible, it tastes, like the name suggests, like chicken!
