This month we present:
Hydroxyapatite: A Fresh Approach to Remineralization
Speaker: Dr. Derek Gatta DMD MS FACP
Course Description:
The presentation objective is to inform the audience on Hydroxyapatite’s (HA) role as a remineralizing agent in prophylactic oral health care. HA has been available for decades, but its use in the US market is very small. HA’s therapeutic benefits include remineralization, sensitivity relief, and building a bio-mimetic enamel-like shield around the tooth. This discussion will dive into the history of HA, the chemical structure, differences between micro and nano particles, and the mechanism of action and therapeutic benefits.
Learning Objectives:
1. Develop an understanding of the mineral, hydroxyapatite, where it is sourced, and its biocompatibility within the body.
2. To evaluate an array of peer-reviewed, published clinical literature and studies on the efficacy and use of hydroxyapatite for various remineralization and sensitivity concerns.
3. Create a comparative awareness of the different HA particle sizes used in oral care products, their safety, and guidelines for responsible use.
About our Speaker:
Dr. Derek Gatta, a highly accomplished Prosthodontist practicing in Boca Raton, Florida. He obtained a BS in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University in 2003 and continued his dental education at Nova Southeastern University in 2009. Dr. Gatta was then awarded a scholarship with the US Navy, which led to his service in the Dental Corps for eight years. He underwent a General Practice Residency at Camp Pendleton, CA, and an MS in oral biology and a certificate in Prosthodontics at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

🚨🌎 GROUND-BREAKING NEWS DURING MERCURY AWARENESS WEEK! 🌎🚨
History has been made.
📢 Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo has officially recommended AGAINST the use of dental amalgam for routine fillings due to the risks of mercury exposure.
This is monumental. While the FDA continues to fall short on protecting patients from mercury in dentistry, Florida has stepped up — putting science and patient safety first. We hope this bold move inspires other states to follow suit.
Why it matters:
* Dental amalgam = 50% mercury by weight.
* Amalgam is linked to 60–95% of mercury found in human tissues.
* Research shows higher mercury levels in blood, urine, breast milk, and placenta among those with amalgam.
* Risks include DNA damage, kidney impairment, and neurodevelopmental harm to children, and much more.
✅ Safe alternatives already exist: composites, glass ionomer, and permanent crowns.
⚠️ The greatest danger comes during placement and removal, which is why safe protocols are critical.
For over 40 years, the IABDM has sounded the alarm, trained dentists in mercury-safe removal protocols, and fought for patient safety. Today, we celebrate this victory — and call on the rest of the country to rise to the occasion.
✨ The future of dentistry is mercury-free. Florida has led the way. Who’s next?
