It’s been days since I watched the Katrina documentary, and my heart is still so heavy.

As a mental health professional, I couldn’t help but view it through a clinical lens. What I saw was heartbreaking and screamed TRAUMA.

Families were displaced. Children were traumatized. Entire communities were left to survive unimaginable loss without emotional support, resources, or even an acknowledgment of their pain.

The water wasn’t the only thing that drowned our people. The silence around their suffering, the lack of support, and the absence of mental health care drowned them, too.

Back then, mental health wasn’t part of the conversation. So many Katrina survivors are still walking around with unprocessed pain, carrying trauma that was never named. They’re still surviving instead of healing.

In our Black communities, that pain often turned into a constant state of “fight or flight.” Trauma became a lifestyle, not a diagnosis. Resilience was the expectation, but it came at a steep cost: Anxiety. Depression. PTSD. These are the quiet wounds that no one talks about, but so many feel.

I can’t stop thinking…
Who did those children grow up to be?
How did they learn to cope—or not cope? Where was their healing?
And are we finally ready to talk about it now?

Before you label or judge a Katrina survivor for how they move through the world today, please consider their story through a culturally sensitive perspective.
