Our hearts go out to the victims of the Central Texas floods. May those who have lost loved ones find strength and those displaced find comfort and safety. In times like these, may our communities come together with compassion, courage, and hope to rebuild what nature has taken. You are in our prayers.

The budget reconciliation bill passed in the U.S. Senate earlier today would harm the health of children, families and communities. It includes sweeping cuts and changes to vital programs that children rely on, including Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The health system for children relies on Medicaid – from pediatric practices to hospitals – and so cuts of this magnitude would impact the ability of all children to access care. Pediatricians are calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to reject this bill. More than 98% of families in this country choose to vaccinate their young children.

But now, vaccine policy is being shaped by the small, extreme minority that doesn’t.

All 17 independent vaccine experts—scientists and doctors who’ve spent their careers protecting children—have been fired. Not because the science changed, but because ideology took its place.

In their seats now are individuals who not only lack the expertise we need to guide vaccine policy, but who have a track record of spreading vaccine misinformation.

This decision doesn’t reflect families. It doesn’t reflect science. It strips away the trusted voices parents rely on and replaces them with anti-vaccine activism.

That’s not protecting families. That’s taking away their power to make informed decisions—and putting kids at risk.

An infant born prematurely and infected with measles has died in Canada. The infant’s mother was infected and had not received the MMR vaccine. Ontario has reported 1,729 confirmed cases of measles since Oct. 28, 2024, and the CDC has confirmed 1,168 cases in the U.S. this year as of June 6. Learn more in AAP News: https://bit.ly/4mOcNEb

Two infants in Kentucky have died of pertussis (also known as whooping cough) in the past six months. According to CDC data, reported cases increased to 12,513 in 2025, up from 7,321 in 2024. Pertussis is a highly contagious infection of the lungs that can cause serious health problems in small children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough with the DTaP vaccine given at 2 months of age, with subsequent doses at 4 months and 6 months, and boosters at 15-18 months and 4-6 years. Pediatricians rely on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to guide vaccine recommendations based on science, not politics. The AAP is alarmed by the firing of all 17 members. Today's decision is about undermining independent medical expertise and will only further endanger the health of the American public, especially children.
