Posted • Sometimes when people hear a diagnosis they give up in changing behavior and improving quality of life. We need to remember that there is always hope for every situation. We can improve skills, we can improve access to reinforcement, we can reduce behaviors that lead to pain. There’s always a way to improve the situation and we need to cling to this so that every person alive can continue to improve their quality of life.

A person would need to have differences in:
1️⃣ Social Communication &
2️⃣ Interests, routines and/or sensory processing

But these differences can be subtle, resulting in people not really recognizing typical and atypical development.

Posted • I first met Mona through where I received my certification as a DIR/Floortime provider.

Mona offered an additional course for clinicians on supporting and nurturing the mental wellness of parents. It was through Mona’s teaching in this course that I first came to fully understand the powerful impact healing ourselves has on our children.

I’m so grateful to call her a colleague and am a better clinician and parent because of her.

Posted • As someone who’s worked in ABA for over 15 years, I’ve started to see patterns of recurring common mistakes in how behavior interventions are used. Can you guess any of them?💭💭

Follow along this week as we countdown the top 4 mistakes we see (and what to do instead!)

First up ~ the reward is too far away! When we’re trying to help our learners make good decisions in the moment, we often need to set up more frequent, smaller rewards to celebrate & recognize their progress. Otherwise, they might not connect their behaviors today with that reward weeks or months away.

Posted • Punishment is often our go to, but it is not as effective as reinforcement. It can be misleading, because it often works in the moment but later, when you’re not present, behavior is likely to occur again. Where reinforcement actually generalizes and the reinforcer doesn’t have to be present or in near proximity. You are likely to see a big difference in your home and the peace that occurs if you switch to reinforcement system.

Posted • As people who care about and support people with behaviours of concern, we must model and use the most inclusive and up to date terminology. Understanding why the language changes happen, facilitate an educated change to promote compassion and support.
Non-speaking is important because it demonstrates that just because they aren’t saying verbal words, they are still making sounds and vocalisations.
Behaviours of concern is needed because we are the one with the concern rather than the person who is displaying them.
Neurodivergent is a more inclusive objective term used for someone who has neurology that is different from the typical brain.
Co-morbid conditions is an important term because the diagnoses are co-existing rather than occurring constantly at the same time.
