Our furry friends have complex emotions too, and sometimes, they may exhibit signs of fear, anxiety, or stress.

😢 In addition to obvious signs like shaking or hiding, dogs may also use self-soothing motions like yawning or scratching to alleviate nervous energy. They may even exhibit displacement behaviors like sniffing or running in circles.

Other signs of an anxious or fearful dog include stiff posture, avoiding eye contact, lip licking, and a tucked or frantically wagging tail. Stay tuned for more tips on how to help your furry friend feel more at ease.

Beware pet owners! Heartworms can be a serious threat to your furry friend's health.

When a mosquito bites an infected dog, they ingest heartworm larvae, which can mature in the mosquito before being transmitted to the next pet the insect bites. In dogs, heartworms can mature to adulthood, mate, and produce offspring in their heart, causing significant health problems. While cats are atypical hosts, immature heartworms can still cause them health problems.

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan.

If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team at Bayou City Vet by calling 713-343-9909, so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

Antibiotics are effective at clearing Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, the causative agent of Lyme disease, but may not eliminate clinical signs.

Lyme disease-induced organ or joint damage (e.g., arthritis, stiffness) may persist and require additional therapy or care. If Lyme disease progresses undetected or untreated, neurologic signs, including seizures, are common, as well as kidney failure, which is often fatal.

Prevent this debilitating condition by contacting us at 713-343-9909 and asking about year-round tick prevention measures. Your furry friend will thank you! 🦟

When interpreting your dog’s body language, it’s important to pay attention to subtle cues as well as overt signals. For instance, a slight shift in weight or a barely visible change in ear position can be important indicators of your dog’s emotional state. Learning to recognize these smaller cues can help you better understand your dog’s needs and desires.

Pet owners, keep your furry friends safe from fertilizer exposure!

While most fertilizers are generally safe, your pet may experience skin irritation or mild gastrointestinal symptoms if they come into contact with or ingest the product. If you suspect your pet has been exposed, remove the product from their skin using warm water and monitor for any symptoms.

Follow instructions carefully and keep your pet away from fertilized areas to keep them happy and healthy!
