Today we celebrate the dedication, resilience, and heart of our orthopedic surgery residents.

On , we recognize the early mornings, the late nights, the meticulous attention to detail in the OR, and the compassionate care delivered to every patient and family.

Residency is demanding, physically, intellectually, and emotionally. Yet our residents continue to show up with integrity, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in orthopaedic surgery.

While this photo highlights just a few members of our team, we are grateful for EVERY resident who strengthens our program and serves our community each day.

To our residents: thank you for advancing patient care, education, and the future of orthopedics.

Earlier this month, our team hosted a hands-on hand ultrasound course at CORIT lab, generously supported by Sonex Health, bringing together hand surgeons, plastic surgery hand specialists, orthopedic hand faculty, and advanced practice providers committed to elevating patient care.

Point-of-care ultrasound is helping make hand and upper extremity care more accessible, efficient, and precise for patients. From faster diagnosis of common hand conditions to ultrasound-guided injections and minimally invasive procedures, this technology helps reduce delays, improve accuracy, and enhance the overall patient experience.

Through collaborative education like this annual course, UTHealth Houston Orthopedics continues investing in innovation, surgical excellence, and patient-centered hand surgery care.

❤️ Heart Health Month | Pearland Heart Walk ❤️

February is Heart Health Month, and our Pearland office team proudly participated in a Heart Walk to raise awareness about heart disease prevention and cardiovascular health in our community.

Regular physical activity — like walking — plays a vital role in improving heart health, lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, and supporting overall wellness. Walking is also a safe, low-impact way to promote joint health, mobility, and orthopedic wellness, making it one of the best exercises for both your heart and musculoskeletal system.

Let’s continue working together toward stronger hearts and healthier joints.

What a fantastic Grand Rounds today with visiting professor Mark H. Getelman, MD. 🙌

Our orthopedic residency and sports medicine fellowship trainees had incredible exposure to high-level case discussions, arthroscopic pearls, and real-world surgical decision-making. It was fascinating to hear Dr. Getelman share his expertise and engage directly with our residents and fellows.

With extensive publications on shoulder, knee, and ankle topics, national and international teaching experience, and his leadership as co-director of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship, his perspective brought tremendous educational value.

Days like this remind us how vital mentorship, collaboration, and continued learning are in shaping the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.

Highlights from last Friday’s Geriatric Trauma Symposium.

The symposium featured a panel on osteoporosis treatment, with Shah Dodwad, MD, and Maura Leo, NP from our team taking the podium. The poster titled “Quality Improvement Review of Fragility Fracture Documentation and Referral Practices in Vertebral Compression Fracture Patients,” a quality improvement project conducted with Maura Leo, NP; resident Michael Kutzler, MD; and a team of medical students, received 2nd place recognition. 🙌

Matthew Koepplinger, DO, and James Saucedo, MD, had the honor of speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Texas Hand Society, in Austin, Texas, alongside colleagues from across the state dedicated to advancing hand care.

Congratulations to Dr. Koepplinger on being selected as the Society’s Secretary, placing him in the Presidential Line, a reflection of his leadership and commitment to the field.

At UTHealth Houston, this work reflects a shared mission: expanding access to exceptional hand surgery for all Texans through community, collaboration, and coordination.

Nurses are at the heart of our care. They provide comfort during difficult moments, advocate for patients and families, and bring compassion and expertise when it’s needed most.

If a UT Physicians nurse made a meaningful difference in your life or the care of someone you love, nominate them for the Houston Chronicle's Salute to Nurses recognition.

Submit your nomination by Sunday, March 1, and help us honor exceptional nurses for their extraordinary care. https://ow.ly/RYf550Y88IW

Thumb CMC arthritis can affect nearly every part of daily life—from gripping and pinching to typing and texting.

UTHealth Houston hand surgeons recently completed early U.S. training on a new surgical technique designed to support faster recovery, preserve thumb anatomy, and improve patient outcomes. This training places UTHealth Houston among a select group of academic medical centers nationwide evaluating this approach.
