Glasses could save your life! Or at the very least make you look presidential.

Millions of Americans wear glasses or contact lenses to correct vision problems, including the presidents. Many chief executives have struggled with eyesight issues before, during, and after their presidencies.

Some, like Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman, were nearsighted and often wore their glasses in public. Others, like President Bill Clinton, only needed them for reading. And some, starting with President Ronald Reagan, opted to wear contact lenses.

In a few extraordinary moments, glasses have played an even more important role in the course of a president’s life. In 1783, the American Revolution’s end was in sight, but Congress had failed to pay the Continental Army for months. Rumors of mutiny swirled. General George Washington addressed his officers, pleading with them to be patient with the civilian government. To read a letter from a sympathetic congressman, Washington had to put on his glasses. “I have grown grey in your service and now find myself growing blind,” he told his officers. Moved by what their leader had endured alongside them, the officers abandoned their plans of mutiny.

More than one hundred years after Washington’s glasses helped him quell a potential mutiny, Theodore Roosevelt’s spectacles helped save his life. In 1912, the former president was again campaigning for the presidency as a candidate for the Bull Moose Party. As he prepared to give a speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Roosevelt was shot by an assassin.

Fortunately, Roosevelt’s metal spectacles case, and a copy of his speech, slowed the bullet. After checking to ensure that he was not mortally wounded, Roosevelt gave his speech to the shocked crowd. He survived the assassination attempt but did not win back the White House. Another bespectacled politician, Woodrow Wilson, won the election of 1912.

Merry Christmas to all of our patients!

Gene therapy for blindness? What an amazing story.

9-year-old Creed Pettit has slowly been going blind since the day he was born. He managed to find his way with lamps and high-powered flashlights, but time was running out. If science didn’t find a cure soon, he’d be blind by the time he reached adulthood. In December 2017, Creed and his family got the news they’ve been waiting for: FDA approval of the first gene therapy for blindness. Within days of treatment at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, he could see things he never saw before. Read more: https://bit.ly/2L2rh1C

How People With Bad Eyesight See The World When They Take Off Their Glasses Illustrated In Oil Paintings
Philip Barlow (@philipbarlow https://bit.ly/2wUEaVO), a Cape Town-based artist, has created a series of paintings that vividly shows the struggle of those who have myopia or nearsightedness, the most common refractive error of the eye.
At a first glance, Barlow’s paintings look like photographs that are out of focus. But these hyperrealistic oil artworks perfectly portray the blurred effect that nearsighted people see when they take off their glasses, and let those with normal vision understand what it’s like to live with this condition.
