“How are you? “ is always a loaded question in our world. Almost everyone we meet comes to us with some sort of body ache or pain. At PHYT For Function we are on a mission to crack the puzzle of adult movement, health, and performance without pain. We use body work and carefully planned exercise to try and find the right combination of pieces to put the picture back together. We do this without medications or many hours in the gym. All of our programs can be done at home or with a coach depending on your preference with minimal equipment required.
We work with the assumption that people are either in pain or working towards performance. If pain is limiting your ability to move well we must first get rid of the pain. We do this through our 3 step process.
Fixing Pain.
Reset
Re-Enforce.
Analyze. Science has pretty well mapped out where your pain is coming from. Point to an area and we can tell you which nerves could be responsible for telling your brain something is under threat. The challenging part is to figure out why that nerve feels like it’s under threat. Think of it like an alarm system that can even detect potential danger. That threat can be either real, or perceived, it can be happening because something was actually damaged or just because something is getting too compressed or stretched, and it can happen anywhere along that nerves pathway. It is very important to try and figure out what the underlying issue is so the alarm system has the opportunity to turn off. Thats where a thorough assessment comes into play.
Our Assessment.
When you come in we will take a thorough health assessment. If the system is running inefficiently from old injuries, stress, lack of sleep, or poor nutrition, that creates its own considerations. We then need to determine if we believe there was actual damaged tissue, or just guarded irritated nerves. We want to find out the why, and then we can find out how to fix it. We will assess your gait, breathing pattern, active and passive movements, and strength. These are all clues to help with the puzzle.
Reset
Often times there are things you can do to “trick” or reset the muscles, nerves, and joints in an area to relax that can help with the pain. If you’re seeing us in person we will use some hands on techniques to help reset the system then we will give you videos on how to do these same resets at home until we can build the strength or flexibility to not need them. Virtual visits are done very similarly except the resets are done at home with the guidance of your coach on a video call.
Re-Enforce
Once you reset the system you need to use the new range of motion and muscle activation patterns to learn how to move in a less painful pattern. This learning from the brain only comes with extreme focus and intention on the new pattern...Followed by some sleep. Sleep is where the magic happens and we lock in it. This part requires work. In some cases with a trauma type injury our therapists can get a reset to hold on its own. The longer the issue has been there the more work it requires on your end. This will require some effort, but by being super focused on your goals and intentions we can maximize your time to exactly what you need.
Working Towards Performance. PHYT For Tomorrow
At some point pain will not be the limiting factor in accomplishing your goals. You will feel a shift from the need to recover from pain as you prepare to build strength, flexibility, endurance, capacity and other skills that help you reach your personal goals. Adults need to be able to withstand emotional, physical, environmental, and even chemical stress to continue to feel and perform well. Our bodies and cells are designed to adapt to stress. WE need to create change, kill off damaged cells, and build stronger ones. Your exercise programming needs to try and find that right amount of stress to stimulate a change but not too much stress that you cant adequately recover. Sleep, Nutrition, and Maintenance Body are all vital in your recovery and ability to recover from stress. Our PHYT For Tomorrow custom programming is designed to maximize what time you have available to make you more resilient for a fit and happy tomorrow. We Focus on 5 key principles
Specific Adaptations to Implied Demands. “SAID” Principle.
Your workout you should specifically train what you need for most adults we find that to be adequately mobility to get up and down from the ground, roll and crawl, run, and jump with out pain while still being strong enough to push, pull, lift moderately heavy things.
Specific Progressions of these demands.
If you are new to training your workout should progress from floor based supported movements, to kneeling, to all 4’s to standing. Once you have full movement capability then we add on endurance and strength!
Skill, Sport, and Play
You should find ways to play, compete and challenge yourself. We are not sport specific coaches. We are active and will often be able to give pointers and tips on whatever your chosen sport or activity is but we have a whole crew of coaches we would rather refer to help you with skill specific tasks. We want to give you the freedom of movement to choose whatever version of sport or play, you wish to take on.
