Today I was shopping and about to buy some refrigerated pesto. As I was checking the date I discovered that these had expired a month ago. I promptly alerted a nearby employee and he took them off the shelf.

Make sure you check the dates on what you buy, especially sale items, as if you stock up, you don't want your savings to be wasted by the product not being at its best.

I'm training myself to go through my pantry periodically and pull the items whose expiration dates are approaching, so I can make sure that they get used in a timely manner. I often take things to one of the local little pantries, where people can just come and pick food items.

Taking the time to start with fresh food challenges me to be appreciative of ready to cook food.
Today I spent time snapping fresh green beans when I had intended to use frozen ones... Yes the store was out.
It reminded me of the many summers my family spent snapping beans and canning them.
This year the deer made out with the beans I grew...

Ministering with food...

There are so many different ways you can do this!

Some ideas might be:

Tacos
Seasoned, browned ground or shredded meat, a bag of lettuce, a bag of cheese, tortillas. You can do a side of salsa and chips or beans and rice.

Barbecue...
Barbecued meat, bought or made at home. Put whatever side you like with it and some buns.

Roast, potatoes, and carrots in a crock pot.

Spaghetti is always a great standby.

Lasagna homemade or Frozen from the store, salad and bread.

A favorite casserole.

A big pot of homemade soup.
This can also be a very economical option!
Potato soup, beefy vegetable, chicken and noodle, chili, or some type of bean soup.

Burgers or hot dogs
Pre-grill the burgers or hot dogs, have a tray of toppings and a side.
It's okay if they need to heat the meat to eat :-)

Food is such a part of our lives!
We use it to celebrate joy, to unwind when stressed and for comfort in difficult times.

In times of trouble, food gifts often say "you aren't alone". I used to think it needed to be a nice meal with a casserole, fruit salad and dessert like my mother would do... I've learned it is not so much what it is, but the act of caring that goes with it!

New moms might get frozen instant pot meals A grief stricken family gets a bag of travel snacks for the journey to mourn with family. A sick mom might get a Walmart order of a frozen lasagna, salad and items healthy & easy for teens to fix.

I like to do meals that will sustain the family, and help them stay well during their challenge. Often it's a main dish, veggie side or salad mix and whole wheat bread. I'm also fond of making soups and chili. I picked up 9 and 12 cup bowls at Dollar tree so I can send family sized portions out easily. With soups I send crackers, cornbread or rolls.
Most of the time the soup is made ahead and transported cold 😉
