As day shift charge nurse in our Ortho-Trauma Unit, Megan Cochran is known for her rock-steady leadership and remarkable compassion. While she began her career as an athletic trainer, a pivot during the pandemic led her to nursing — and we are so glad it did! 🩺

From her roots in Florida to finding a home here in the Rocket City, Megan has become an indispensable part of the Huntsville Hospital family. She’s made such a great impression, in fact, that we just surprised her with our 2025 Employee of the Year Award! 🏆

“It’s incredibly humbling that out of the thousands of great employees at Huntsville Hospital, someone would throw my name in the hat for recognition,” Megan said. "I’m so grateful for the Ortho-Trauma staff who loves me and lifts me up. I’m just very lucky." 🍀

Actually, Megan, we’re the lucky ones! Please join us in celebrating Megan for this well-deserved honor. 👏🏥

🌟 Congratulations to our newest DAISY Award winner! 💮

Xiaoman "Simone" Ma, RN, from our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, was nominated by a grateful daughter who described Simone as a "lifeline" during one of the most difficult times her family has ever faced. Her story reminds us all that true nursing is about the powerful human connection behind the medicine.

"Even when my mom was sedated and intubated, Simone never treated her like she wasn’t present. She spoke to her gently, explained what she was doing, and interacted with her with a level of dignity and respect that moved me deeply. Watching her care for my mom reminded me that real nursing goes far beyond medications and monitors."

The family also highlighted Simone's dedication to keeping them informed and comforted:

"She explained each step of my mom’s care in words I could understand, never brushing off my concerns or making me feel like a burden. No matter how busy the unit was, Simone showed up with the same calm, steady presence. In a situation where everything felt fragile and uncertain, she brought a sense of safety that I will never forget."

Simone, thank you for your skill, your heart, and for being a fierce advocate for your patients and their families. You truly embody the mission of Huntsville Hospital, and we are so fortunate to have you on our team! ❤️

Huntsville Hospital’s own Tri’Sheena Stokes knows the signs of a stroke. But at age 39, she never imagined she was having one while out shopping. Even as she struggled to pick up her phone and noticed her speech changing, she pushed through her day.

It took a trip to the ER and a specialized angiogram with Dr. Bhageeradh Mulpur at our Spine & Neuro Center to reveal a dissected, or partially torn, artery on the right side of her brain.

Now a survivor, Tri’Sheena is sharing her story for National Blood Clot Awareness Month. Her message is simple: Listen to your body and never ignore the symptoms, no matter your age.

Read more about Tri’Sheena’s journey at the link in our bio. 🏥✨

From Friday night lights to a fight for life. 🏈❤️

In honor of Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month, we’re sharing Cole Thorn’s powerful story of survival and recovery.

After collapsing on the sideline during a high school football game, Cole was rushed into emergency surgery with Spine & Neuro neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Sandwell leading his care. Through expert treatment, faith, and overwhelming support from teammates and community, Cole’s story became one of resilience and hope.

Please join us in giving a warm Rocket City welcome to our newest leader! 🚀

We are thrilled to announce that Rebecca Duncan has been named director of Huntsville Hospital’s Neuro-Spine Unit. 🧠

Rebecca is a true veteran of the HH family, bringing 24 years of nursing expertise to her new role. She spent the vast majority of that time in our Neuro Intensive Care Unit — rising from dedicated bedside caregiver to night shift charge nurse. 🩺

A Huntsville native, Rebecca originally headed to UAH for Computer Science. Thankfully, a wise professor suggested nursing instead — and the rest is history!

We are so proud to have Rebecca leading the charge for our Neuro-Spine team. Please leave a comment below to congratulate her on this well-deserved promotion! 🏥💙

For Black History Month, Huntsville Hospital was honored to host a truly legendary figure from our community: Dr. Shelia Nash-Stevenson.

A retired Marshall Space Flight Center scientist, Dr. Nash-Stevenson holds a distinguished place in American history as one of the first Black women in the U.S. to earn a PhD in Physics. In 2016, she was recognized as a NASA “Modern Figure” and represented the space agency at the red carpet premiere of the movie “Hidden Figures.”

Her remarkable journey from growing up in a home without running water to earning a federal patent in fiber-optics reminds us that "the sky is not the limit — it’s just the beginning."

We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Nash-Stevenson for sharing her story that serves as inspiration to the next generation of doctors, scientists, and dreamers in the Rocket City. 🚀

Thanks also to HH’s own William Hampton for teaching us more about the origins of Black History Month, and to local gospel musician Dr. Janette Chandler-Kotey for lending her amazing voice to our celebration. 🎶
