The Chiropractic profession is unique. In Oregon a Doctor of Chiropractic can perform minor surgery and deliver babies. While in Washington a Chiropractor can’t and you’re not even allowed to wear a stethoscope. In California we are licensed physicians that can examine, diagnose and treat diseases without perscribing any drugs or piercing the skin. We can x-ray people and read the images. We refer to other healthcare professionals for conditions that are more appropriately treated by another provider including but not limited to MD, PT, DO, OD, LMT, OT, SLP, psychiatrist, orthopedist, neurologist, pain management, MFCC, psychologist as needed. I focus on back and neck pain in my practice but when patients are in need, I have x-rayed or treated every joint in the body.

Recently a 67-year-old male patient complained of "something moved" resulting in 2 weeks of prolonged low back pain after yard work. He also asked about diet modification for weight loss.
3 weeks and 6 adjustments later and the back pain went from less to better to gone. We modified the diet by increasing vegetables and fruits. He then automatically decreased portion sizes and late night 'grazing'. He lost 14lbs in 3 weeks and has more energy. Whoot whoot it is possible even in your 60's. Do it.

The 3 second stretch? There is some pretty good research that show we benefit from multiple 3 second stretches over one sustained 30 second static stretch. Part of the theory has to do with blood flow and capillary refill. If you squeeze the tip of your finger briefly and then let go, you can see the blood return as your finger changes color from white to pink. This happens in 2-3 seconds. That is because you have squeezed out the blood at the capillary level and then it returns. In the muscles when you stretch you are squeezing (lengthening) them. At this capillary level the blood pressure is so low that just a squeeze/ stretch pushes out blood. By stretching for 3 seconds then going back to neutral you actually help pump blood out used deoxygenated blood along with metabolized by-products and bring in fresh oxygenated blood with nutrients. You may have also heard you should warm up before stretching. That’s because by warming up you have increased the blood in the muscles, more pumping. So if we do 3 second stretches after warming up we will be able to stretch better and usuallysee results with each stretch. Go ahead try your favorite stretches with this twist, 3 second slow stretch, back to neutral 12 times. Let me know how it goes.

Happy Birthday to my favorite Mexican dancing machine madre. Natalie Schelly still loves life, dancing and cooks better than 95% of the world. She is my biggest fan and I’m super lucky to see her at least once a month when I visit her and my Dad in Yuma AZ.
