It's getting COLD this afternoon and even colder tomorrow morning here in Central Florida!

Cold weather tips to protect your garden:
-Keep your soil moist, not wet, and turn off any irrigation
-Cover soil and plants with non-plastic material
Soil: mulch, newspaper, straw, hay
Plants: create tent that touches the ground w/ sheets/blankets
-DON'T "lollypop" your trees or shrubs
-Relocate potted plants to sheltered area or close to house/fence

After this cold snap....
-DON'T even think about fertilizing anytime soon
-Wait to prune until after the threat of possible frost passes
-Delay disposing of plants that look dead-they may come back!

Did you know lettuce can bolt in the cooler winter months here in central Florida?

If you are new to gardening, you may be wondering “What is bolting?”. Bolting is when veggies transition into their reproduction (flower and seed) phase. Your veggies are not going to be as tasty- typically more of a bitter flavor.

How can you prevent? Try harvesting or pruning the veggies before the plant starts to mature or bloom. Other reasons for bolting could be lack of water, high temps, and longer days.

Always exciting to find a rare caterpillar in the garden! The Atala butterfly was once thought to be extinct but thanks to hard work of various scientists (both academic and citizen) the population of has been steadily growing throughout the south and central areas of Florida. Because the Coontie is the only known host plant for the Atala’s larvae stage, I’ve planted several throughout my yard and in other gardens I volunteer.

For the love of gardening.

Florida Gardenista was grown from my love of gardening. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved getting my hands in the dirt and working with plants. Gardening is not only my passion, but also my therapy. I’m from five generations of Florida farmers and my garden currently resides in zone 9b. My hope is that my photos, videos and blog bring you answers, awesome ideas and help your garden flourish!
