💊 GLP-1 Medications & Weight Loss: Can Your Genes Predict Your Results?
Obesity affects over 40% of adults in the U.S., and many are turning to GLP-1 drugs (like semaglutide & tirzepatide) to shed pounds. On average, patients can lose 10% of their body weight—sometimes even 25%! But not everyone responds the same, and side effects like nausea and vomiting are common.
New research from Nature may change the game: 🧬
Using data from 23andMe and the All of Us cohort, scientists found that genetic variations (SNPs) in the GLP-1 receptor can predict how much weight someone might lose and whether they’ll experience side effects.
One key variant, rs10305420, can boost weight loss but also increase the likelihood of nausea.
The frequency of these variants differs by ancestry, which may explain some differences in drug response.
This is a step toward precision medicine for weight loss—tailoring GLP-1 therapy based on your genetics and reducing trial-and-error.
Takeaway: GLP-1s aren’t one-size-fits-all, but soon your DNA might help guide the safest and most effective weight-loss plan for you.
