This strategy has been a life saver. When I'm working with someone who is highly distractible or hyperverbose, I can feel my own brain having a hard time focusing!
I find being super clear and communicative about the client-centered goals for a session helps us all start focused. Writing them down one at a time is even more helpful.
And taking mental breaks helps meet our patients where they (and their ๐Ÿง  s) are! Just like physical breaks. We aren't "doing nothing," we're teaching attention strategies through therapeutic breaks.
What are your strategies for helping folks (including yourself! ๐Ÿ˜…) stay focused during a session?

Tonight's course on burnout is personal. For all of us.
TL;DR: Burnout is not your fault. You can stop expecting too much from yourself.

Research shows building psychological resilience is NOT what makes burnout go away. You don't need to be stronger. The systems need to better support OT professionals, all healthcare professionals, so we can do our jobs and sustain our own health. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ You are not alone.
OT is hard.
Neuro is harder.
We are not machines.

Maybe you need a few minutes to think or to breathe or to shed a few tears from the devastating thing you just heard.

We are humans first. Humans with big hearts. Humans who need time to process and time to rest.

It's ok to take a breather when you need one... that's what supply closets are kinda for.

A few therapists in my last post on taping and electrical stimulation for shoulder subluxation asked if there is any evidence. Here's one article we reviewed in our recorded subluxation course in the Collective.

As for taping, research does not show it improves the subluxation but it may improve pain.

Experience tells me when a patient has less pain they guard it less and are more able to use it in task specific training.

You can also put the electrodes underneath the tape and use simultaneously.
