The Medical Imaging Research Institute within the IU Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the Indiana University School of Medicine brings together the strengths of neuroimaging, cardiovascular imaging research and an enhanced imaging core to redefine how we treat patients worldwide through enhanced diagnostics, imaging research and innovation.

February is American Heart Month! Did you know that nearly half of all people in the U.S. have some form of cardiovascular disease? Early detection is key to protecting your heart.

Advanced imaging, such as cardiac CT or MRI, allows us to see potential issues before symptoms begin, helping you and your doctor take action early.

Our department is also working on research to help save lives from cardiac death. Back in late 2025, a major milestone was achieved by our department scientists that enables the detection of hemorrhagic myocardial infarction based on a blood test. This test is expected to open new opportunities for novel therapies for patients developing hemorrhagic myocardial infarction (the worst form of heart attacks) and to empower imaging approaches for deep tissue characterization.

Today, on Maternal Health Awareness Day, we wish to highlight the critical role of radiology in monitoring pregnancy, diagnosing complications, and ensuring equitable care. 🫄🩺

By focusing on vital imaging: ultrasounds for fetal growth, placental health, and early detection of issues like gestational hypertension or diabetes, we can reduce preventable maternal deaths by performing timely interventions through advanced diagnostics. IU radiologists, while leveraging cutting-edge technology and data, work to improve maternal outcomes by supporting patient-centered care and addressing disparities, making imaging a cornerstone of comprehensive maternal-fetal medicine.

January is National Winter Sports Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Awareness Month, a time to highlight the risks of TBIs in winter sports and emphasize the importance of prevention and early diagnosis. 🧠🩻❄️

We recognize the critical role that advanced imaging plays in assessing and managing TBIs. Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding, playing ice hockey, or snowmobiling, understanding the risks and taking precautions can help you enjoy your favorite winter activities safely.

Winter sports are exhilarating but come with inherent risks. Slippery surfaces, high speeds, and unpredictable weather conditions can lead to falls or collisions that may result in head injuries. TBIs range from mild concussions to severe brain trauma and can have lasting effects on cognitive, physical, and emotional health. Symptoms of TBIs include headaches, dizziness, confusion, memory loss, nausea, and mood changes. If you or a loved one experience these symptoms after a winter sports accident, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
