I question almost everything. This may seem like a bad thing to some, but I use it as an opportunity to grow and learn.๐ด
When it comes to healthcare, being your own advocate and questioning things isnโt a sign of disrespect. Itโs simply a way to understand why things are done and honestly, itโs necessary in the world we live in today. With the rise in technology and use of social media, sometimes things we read or see on TV or online can be false or misleading. And sometimes protocols and procedures in healthcare are outdated and not questioned enough. โ๐ป
Over the last three years I have spent many hours questioning and learning about the way things are currently done with pre-conception and prenatal health, childbirth, and postpartum care, as well as different ways of raising our children. What I have learned is that there are many ways to approach these extremely important chapters of life and that itโs NOT a one size fits all.
After Islaโs pregnancy, an ectopic, and now my current pregnancy with baby boy, Iโm very confident in what Iโve learned on my own, from the midwives, and from my doulas.
Here are a few of the things I have chosen to do differently when it comes to pre-conception and prenatal careโฆ
- I stopped birth control and all alcohol consumption 6 months before trying to conceive. I never restarted birth control after my first pregnancy and I have chosen to not drink any alcohol for now.
- I learned about and now use the Fertility Awareness Method to prevent and predict fertility and conception.
- I choose to use hospital-based midwives who have an evidence-based yet more holistic approach to prenatal care and established care with them prior to conceiving.
- I used reiki, journaling, spiritual healing and crystals for pre-conception along with a specific pre-conception diet high in healthy fats and folate.
- I started taking a high-quality prenatal vitamin 6 months prior to trying to conceive.
- I decline all V during pregnancy and received the TDaP postpartum upon discharge from the hospital after birth.
- I use the for my glucose tolerance test. ๐
