Did you know that our department operates a resident-run free clinic at Iowa City Free Medical & Dental Clinic, the 2nd longest-running free clinic in the US? Or that we recently started performing panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) for patients with advanced diabetic retinopathy? Now you do! Our volunteers love spending Saturdays providing care to people in the Iowa City and the surrounding community who would not otherwise have access to care.

When Emily and Adam from Iowa City welcomed their third child into the world on October 5, 2020, their doctor noticed immediately there was a problem with little Avery’s eyes.
They were referred to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Department of Ophthalmology where Avery was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder of the eyes called Peters anomaly, which caused thinning and clouding of her corneas, along with glaucoma and cataracts.
Joyful over the birth of their beautiful daughter, Emily and Adam were now devastated to learn she was blind. Hope for sight came three months later when Dr. Mark Greiner performed corneal transplants on each of Avery’s eyes, just one week apart.
In a heartfelt letter to the families of Avery’s cornea donors, her grateful parents wrote, “Our three-month-old daughter received a transplant thanks to your gift. It will be a long road, but there is hope she will see. We realize the terrible loss you have suffered to make this gift possible. What you and your loved one have done will leave a lasting mark on the life of our little girl and our whole family. We hope this letter and our sincere gratitude brings you peace.”

Women in Ophthalmology | The Resident Experience
Are you attending this year's Women in Ophthalmology Summer Symposium? See what our residents have to say about their experiences, including research and technology, work-life balance, and mentorship. "One of the things that has been great for me has been the opportunity to meet women from all over the country, who've taken their ophthalmology careers in all different kinds of directions. Hearing them talk about their careers, but also hearing them just talk about their lives. I think that's something as a woman in this field, it's really nice to see how other people in similar situations to you make it work and balance their lives." - Lindsay McConnell, MD (PGY4)

Age-Related Macular Degeneration
"At the Wynn Institute for Vision Research, our primary goal is to be able to treat patients with inherited retinal disease, whether it’s a rare cause like Retinitis Pigmentosa, or something more common like age-related macular degeneration. For people with relatively early disease, we’ve found that gene therapy has a lot of promise, but those with late phases of disease, where a lot of cells have been lost, we’re using induced pluripotent stem cells to replace the cells that are derived from that same patient, corrected for their genetic mutation, to deliver a treatment that will hopefully restore vision." Elliott Sohn, MD, is a retina surgeon and scientist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Wynn Institute for Vision Research - WIVR.

It is amazing how a man who is now over 90 years old and a very modest but brilliant scientist in Iowa City (whom I met and was his patient of a few years ago) at the University's Ophthalmology dept. impacted my and my wife's life with all three of his first fundamental ground breaking discoveries, neuro-ophthalmologist prof. Sohan Hayreh of Iowa University.
He discovered how glaucoma is not a mechanical but a vascular issue, how fundus angiography (he was a main pioneer researching using this technology) can identify choroidal melanoma (which I have) and that the blood supply of the optic nerve head is entirely provided by the posterior ciliary artery circulation, which completely changed the entire concept about the optic nerve's circulatory disorders, especially about the origin and development of AION (anterior ischemic optic neuropathy - which I have).
Great men affect many lives in life improving ways, and often deeply.
That reminds me that we better ought to thank men like him while they still live.
Thank your professor Sohan Hayreh.
