About 70,000 adolescents and young adults (AYA) are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. This accounts for about 5% of cancer diagnoses in the United States. This is about six times the number of cancers diagnosed in young children. (1)
Despite significant improvements in cancer survival rates for young children and older adults, survival rates for cancer in AYA have shown little improvement in the last 4 decades. Evidence suggests that some cancers in adolescents and young adults may have unique genetic and biological features. Researchers are working to learn more about the biology of cancers in young adults so that they can identity molecularly targeted therapies that may be effective in these cancers. (2)
Austin “Flash” Schroeder was diagnosed with a form of T-cell lymphoma in April 2014 at the age of 14. The highly aggressive cancer was ultimately a force for which Austin's body and current medical treatments have no answer. The treatment course was not smooth, he often faced more setbacks than he did gains. Through it all, however, he continued to smile, he continued to fight, and he continued to hope. He passed away on April 28, 2015 at 15 years old. The Fight With Flash Foundation was created to honor the life and spirit of Austin “Flash” Schroeder. Austin’s life-long positive energy, zest for life, and “Win The Day” attitude continued --- and even flourished --- during his illness. His steady resolve amidst adversity continues to inspire thousands of people in the Iowa City area and well beyond. Austin’s story will continue to motivate others to “Win The Day.”
The Mission of the Fight With Flash Foundation is to serve children, adolescents, and young adults, as well as their families, when faced with a cancer diagnosis. The Fight With Flash Foundation will:
1. raise up our superhero, Austin “Flash” Schroeder, by continuing to tell his story.
2. raise awareness of the need for ongoing research towards the prevention and treatment of cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults.
3. raise the spirits of those afflicted by helping with spiritual, financial, or physical needs.
4. raise funds that will be directed towards medical research. The Fight With Flash Foundation will work to financially support the development of the new AYA Cancer specialty center at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. We need your help, and together we will WIN THE DAY! The Fight With Flash Foundation is managed by volunteer board members and no donated funds will be retained by individual board members. The Fight With Flash Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law.
