Recently the AirCare 2 team had the opportunity to meet one of their patients at a ground safety class in Toledo, Iowa.
Aiden is the young man pictured with his family. He was transported from the accident scene in Tama County to the University of Iowa by AirCare 2 after having an ATV accident and suffering a head injury. We are happy to report that Aiden has made a full recovery.
Also pictured are the first responders and paramedics who provided initial care to Aiden and were instrumental in his successful recovery.
Written permission received from Aiden’s family to publish his story.

We would like to wish Dr. James Hart farewell and best of luck as he has completed his EMS fellowship at the University of Iowa. Dr. Hart worked hard providing education and leadership this past year to AirCare and local EMS agencies, as well as our own emergency department at UIHC.
The EMS fellowship prepares highly qualified and motivated academic emergency physicians for medical oversight and leadership in pre-hospital and out-of hospital emergency care systems with advanced competencies in EMS, administration and clinical care.
The University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) EMS fellowship is directed by Dr. Azeem Ahmed, and the University of Iowa is the only hospital in the state to offer this advanced educational opportunity.
Please join me in congratulating Karla Dillard on her 3,000th patient flight.
Karla joins a very small group of AirCare flight nurses and flight paramedics to mark this rare accomplishment.
Karla started with AirCare in 1993 and joins Mike Dillard, Jeff Lipcamon, Pat Doser, Steve Fuller, and Mark Mahler as members of the 3,000 flight club.
Congratulations, Karla! What a great accomplishment.
Please join us in wishing AirCare 2 a happy 34th anniversary!
AirCare 2 is based in Waterloo and has been serving eastern and central Iowa as well as southern Minnesota since June 1988.
Their current aircraft is the EC130T2 model, N798AC.
Happy EMS week to all of our colleagues who give selflessly whenever you are called upon. It is our distinct pleasure to partner with you in every situation. EMS is a small community that makes a profound impact on the citizens you serve. Hats off to you all.
In the spirit of anniversary celebrations, please help us with AirCare 1 a happy 43rd anniversary.
AirCare 1 became the first hospital based helicopter EMS program in the state on April 1st, 1979.
Today, based at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, AirCare 1 has a multifaceted team that is responsible for providing the highest quality of care to our patients. Thank you to all of our administrators, flight nurses, flight paramedics, neonatal/pediatric transport nurses, respiratory therapists, drivers, pilots, and mechanics for you do to make the AirCare 1 program a success.
Happy Anniversary!
Today marks the sixth anniversary for our AirCare 3 program based at the Dubuque Regional Airport. We have a fantastic team of flight nurses, flight paramedics, pilots, and mechanics serving northeast Iowa, northwest Illinois, and southwest Wisconsin. Please help us in wishing them a happy anniversary. We look forward to watching them grow for years to come!
Mr. Doug York served as a previous program director of AirCare. Before that, Doug paved the way for paramedics in Iowa as a prehospital medical provider. Doug went on to educate EMS students in a way that only Doug could. Doug’s leadership in the University of Iowa’s EMSLRC was cutting edge, and with his staff they were able to educate and train thousands of EMT’s, paramedics, nurses, and physicians in Iowa and around the world.
After retiring from the EMSLRC Doug served with the Committee on Accreditation for EMS Professions where he visited countless programs to ensure compliance with educational standards. In that role Doug also visited numerous programs throughout the country offering his expertise in educating prehospital professionals.
Doug’s health has recently declined and this post is a tribute to his impact as a man and educator.
The EMS profession and the providers of prehospital medicine are better because of Doug’s vision and dedication to education. Thank you Doug.
It’s always great to partner with EMS, fire and law enforcement agencies.
The first picture posted is AirCare 1. Why is it special? Because AirCare was on a flight today, just like many days, to transport a critically ill baby.
We would like to recognize our neonatal/pediatric team. Established in the 1970’s, AirCare has provided air and ground ambulance services to transport the tiniest and most critically ill infants and children to the state of Iowa’s only Level 4 NICU and the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital PICU.
AirCare is the only EMS helicopter service in eastern Iowa with a fully dedicated team of nurses, paramedics, and respiratory therapists, with specialized training for neonatal and pediatric transport, available 24/7/365 by ground ambulance or helicopter.
Here are a few pictures of the history of our neo/peds team. You can see the advancements made over the years in technology.
Our current neonatal/pediatrics nurses are:
Michele Minnich, Nurse Manager
Kate Schwenker
Sheila Schmidt

Crystal Danger

Respiratory therapists:
