In response to the current national crisis with COVID-19, we are still fully committed to providing medical care to our patients and will remain open at all three of our locations. We are following the CDC, and Iowa Department of Health recommendations of social distancing so we have changed our appointment protocol.
We ask all clients to call us (or honk your horn) when you have arrived at our practice. One of our staff members will provide car-side check in, will es**rt your furry family member into the building while you wait in your vehicle. Once the veterinarian has examined your companion, we will call you with a recommended treatment plan. We will check all clients out over the phone and return the pet to you with your receipt as well as any necessary medications.
If you need to pick up food, or medications, we ask you follow the same protocol of calling when you arrive. We will be happy to check you out over the phone and bring necessary items out to you.
If you would prefer to order your pet's medication through our online pharmacy, you can register at: veterinaryassociatesia.myvetstoreonline.pharmacy Click on "Register", enter 52240 in the zip code and select "Veterinary Associates-Iowa City". All Heartgard, Nexgard, and Frontline Rebates are immediate-no more waiting for rebate cards! All medications and pet foods are delivered to your home with most orders qualifying for free shipping.
We feel the need to make these changes to keep the public safe as well as our employees so we can continue to be here when you need us the most.
Thank you for your patience as we all move through this ever changing crisis together.

A recent increase in heart disease in dogs eating certain types of diets may shed light on the role of diet in causing heart disease. It appears that diet may be increasing dogs’ risk for heart disease because owners have fallen victim to the many myths and misperceptions about pet food.

Happy Vet Tech Week to Teresa!
Teresa has been with us since July and is a graduate of Kirkwood Community College. We value Teresa's experience as a technician and her willingness to jump into any given situation. Thank you for all you do!
Here's what Teresa had to say about becoming a Vet Tech: "I actually thought I wanted to be vet since I was 12. My momma cat had litter of kittens and they were born sickly. I was able to save one. When I was 20 I did a job shadow and found out I enjoyed the nursing more. Especially educating of first time puppy/kitty owners because I can share information and my experience with them AND watch their baby grow up."

Happy Vet Tech Week to Kyanne!
Kyanne has is a vet tech student at Muscatine Community College and will graduate in the Summer of 2018. Kyanne has been with us since this July and is quickly becoming an essential asset to our team. She's a great student always looking to learn new things and we're very excited to continue to watch her grow!
Here's what Kyanne had to say about wanting to be a Vet Tech: "I wanted to become a Veterinary Technician because I have always had a passion for animals, and being in this precession allows me to do what I love every single day. I love that there is something new to learn with each patient that comes though the door to enhance my skills, making me better. I want to be a part helping animals as well as their owners become more educated about their pets. I have known for a long time that this is what I’ve wanted to do, and I am very fortunate to be able to do it every day!"

Today's Vet Tech Week Fact!
Veterinary Technicians are Pharmacy Technicians. When you come in to pick up your pet's prescription, the Veterinary Technician gets the prescription together for you. They also relay instructions, side effects and answer any questions you may have about your pet's prescription. Veterinary Technicians know how your pet's drug will travel through your pet's body and any interactions it could have as well!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Debra!

I love learning new things in all aspects of veterinary medicine. I also enjoy helping to educate owners on how to keep their pets as healthy and happy as possible while helping teach them good manners as well."

Here's today's fun Vet Tech fact!
Vet Techs are phlebotomists! When your pet needs thier blood drawn, it's likely the Veterinary Technician will be the one to do it!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Jessica!
Jessica is finishing her final semester of veterinary technician school at San Juan College and has been working with our patients for over 3 years. Jessica is an integral member of our surgical team and provides outstanding nursing care to her patients. Congratulations Jessica - your graduation day is quickly approaching!
Here is what Jessica had to say about choosing to be a vet tech: "Helping animals has truly become my passion. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life until I found vet med. Now, getting to work with and make a difference in an animal's life everyday is incredibly rewarding. Everyday is different and I'm always learning new things to better my patients."

Today's fun Vet Tech fact!
Veterinary Technicians are Nurse anesthetists. When your pet is brought in for a surgical procedure, the Veterinary Technician is with your pet from start to finish. They are the ones who induce and control the anesthesia while the doctor is performing the surgery!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Hannah!
Hannah has been with us for 3 years and is currently a student technician attending San Juan College. She's a knowledgeable resource for clients as well as a caring technician for your pet. We thank Hannah for all her contributions!
Hannah said this about why she enjoys being a Vet Tech:
"I like being a Vet Tech because I get to learn something new everyday and no two days are the same. I like teaching people new things about their pet. I also really like the medicine that is involved with vet med. I enjoy watching animals grow up."
10/17/2017
Time for another fun fact about Vet Techs for Vet Tech week!
Veterinary technicians are also your pet's dental hygienist. When your pet is anesthetized for a dental cleaning, it is the Veterinary Technician who does all the scaling (tartar removal) and polishing. Just like your own dental hygienist for your own teeth!
10/16/2017
Fun Fact about Veterinary Technicians!
Veterinary Technicians wear multiple job "hats", but first and foremost are Nurses. So much so, that the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America is working to change the title from "Veterinary Technician" to "Veterinary Nurse". Veterinary Technicians have gone to school from 2-4 years to graduate with a highly specialized degree to best care for your pet. They do most of the "hands on" portion with your pets. From placing catheters (intravenous and urinary), applying bandages to administering medications and taking vital signs, they do it all. Anything a human nurse would do for a human, a veterinary technician can do for your pet!

Happy National Vet Tech Week to Amanda, our Practice Manager and Registered Veterinary Technician! Thank you for all you do! This Practice wouldn't run without you!
We asked Amanda why she chose Veterinary Medicine and to become a Veterinary Technician. Here is what she said:
"I enjoy utilizing my college degrees to enhance the lives of my patients. It is very rewarding to be with a patient from their first visit, to being the anesthetist during any surgical procedure they have, by providing nursing care during illnesses, all the way until they complete their journey during their final visit. The days can be long, but at the end of each day you know you made a difference in their lives."

Here at our clinic, we have a Registered Veterinary Technician, Vet Techs who have graduated from a tech program and several Student Technicians.
This week, everyday, we'll give you an interesting fact about veterinary technicians you may not know, as many people aren't sure what Vet Techs do. They are a vital part of a practice, that's for sure! We'll also have a special feature on each of our own Vet Techs this week, starting with our Practice Manager and Registered Veterinary Technician, Amanda!
Stay tuned for more, later today!

Welcome to Fall!
Many clients are tempted to discontinue their flea and tick prevention when it starts to cool down outside (which we hope it does soon!). At the very least, we recommend continuing preventatives until a good hard freeze. With our crazy Iowa weather though, sometimes you never know, and many clients continue using flea and tick prevention year round, just to be safe. We always recommend using heartworm prevention year round no matter what.
We always have deals running on many of the preventatives and we still have several cat toys available if you buy Frontline Gold for you kitty. Stop on in, we'd love to see you!
