When I encounter a new patient, I see her or him as a life story. She is not bringing me an arm or a brain to be fixed. She is bringing her whole self, longing to be seen and recognized as a human being.
Again and again, she has been ignored. Survival mode has taken over, and her creative buttons have been turned off. My desire as an acupuncturist is to help turn those buttons back on—to create a space where she can be seen, felt, and remembered as whole.
