THIS SUNDAY 7/6 at 11am PST - join us virtually or in studio for our next lecture!

ANITO: From the Austronesian “ani” (soul or spirit)
and Malay “to” or “toh” (resident of the head).

Shamanic practices around the world are based on the concept of animism, which is the attribution of a soul to animate and inanimate objects, and natural phenomena. It is the belief in a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe. This is evident in the Philippine and the rest of the Austronesian belief in the “anito” that, firstly, refers to the soul of an ancestral spirit. It is the basis of the old practice of headhunting. Its meaning eventually broadened to include various spirits or entities, as found in plants, rocks, trees, bodies of water, carvings, and amulets.

This short lecture led by Virgil Apostol, author of Way of the Ancient Healer: Sacred Teachings from the Philippine Ancestral Traditions (North Atlantic Books, 2010) will review the history and origins of anitos, their significance, touch on a few historic practice and rituals, and engage dialogue on how to live in harmony with the anitos in your daily life.

This will be a two-part series.

Sunday, July 6th @ 11am PST

and Sunday, August 3rd @ 11am PST

$33 registration

Offered via Zoom livestream and in-studio.

You can purchase his book as an optional supportive text for this course anywhere online.

Langá: form // Dumadangádang: warrior 🐊🐊 we came together to learn from Manusuro , to ground, channel, strengthen, by way of the Langat' Dumadangádang : The 20 Warrior Postures of Didya Mudgara Warrior Club Calisthenics.

Langat’ Dumadangádang (Langá ti Dumadangádang) involves a series of “Warrior Postures” with various sidadáän (still, yet alert) movements that stretch (innát), contract (kukót), and twist (tirítir) the torso and limbs of the body. The effective ex*****on of these movements are governed by conscious awareness (nákem) and the breath (ánges) that involve inhalation (palang-áb) and exhalation (pasang-áw). After the initial position, (a) Ready Posture, they will then transition into: (b) Plant Life, (c) Animal Life, (d) Armament, and (e) Community, thus embodying aspects of the microcosm and macrocosm. Each of these langá are to be done a minimum of one minute each.

During times like these, we feel so lucky to share a powerful yet safe space with these beautiful humans !! Thank you for coming out !!

The healing arts from the Philippines are numerous, each having their own theories and philosophies. The methods and their principles taught by Ka extend from his maternal and paternal lineages of traditional healers, brought forth in a unique way conceived through his perspectives and years of research on both ablon/hilot and the Filipino martial arts.

Pictured are .rmn, , .tune and some of the current students learning Ablon Seated Therapy, applying these very principles that make this practice unique. Like the Ablon Table Therapy module, which they will soon be undergoing, they are required to submit a certain number of case studies as part of their practice and education.

We're so happy to have incredible students part of our cohort. Applications and enrollment is still OPEN ‼️ for our winter program. And - it's possible that we won't offer this program for a while after so come join us while you can!

Biomechanics Workshop Insight from

"When you experience the training - you start to appreciate much more.

During the workshop, training started with stone breathing. That was a trip...a trip inside the body and spirit.

The 20 Postures were introduced.
That is when the intensity
increased. Every intermediate and beginner practitioner knows the feeling of holding postures seemingly forever.

Then after lunch, Ka started introducing them to various exercises taken directly from the beginners Kailukuan class.

It is fascinating to look at these basics once again as an intermediate student. You get to reflect. You see how your intermediate movement practice relates to the basic movements.

The weight shifting, the arm movements, the basic strikes to even the breathing. It all integrates together.

Many innovators of self defense and martial arts of today have discovered the same realization.
You always return to the basics. If your basics are solidly built, your more advanced movements are much easier to execute.

This is one of the unique aspects in Kailukuan and all old school training.
Basics are the foundation.

This cannot be overstated enough. Everyone wants advance rapidly. Everyone wants to get to the actual sparring. When you actually get there - you miss the simpler days of just drilling movements over and over again.

You get nervous because of the intensity of dealing with fast flying sticks, heavier than normal sticks to swing and a level of fear that make you say "WTH was that" ...by the end of class.

When I left the workshop early each participant was beginning to understand the depth of knowledge that they were receiving. They practiced simple movements of the basicsm. Simple movements are much more nuanced than we think.

The Kailukuan Way will always weave the basics to every advance movement. Think of it like thread that connects the past training to present training.

So enjoy your time in beginners class in Kailukuan. When the day comes when you reach the next stage, you will realize how important your basics truly are.

Happy Training..."
