Jason Day’s vertigo

People often ask me what caused Jason Day’s collapsed at the US Open. He had a type of vertigo known as BPPV (benign proximal positional vertigo). It is highly treatable and that’s very good news. It is caused by small calcium crystals called canaliths moving from the part of the inner ear where they belong to another part where they don’t belong. The result is that when someone with this puts their head in certain positions, like Day picking up his ball, the ear sends the wrong signal to the brain and the person gets dizzy.

Treatment includes proper diagnosis because there are many types of vertigo and many types of BPPV; we recommend that this only be performed by an audiologist or otolaryngologist (ENT). The solution is a 2 minute painless procedure done in our office several times a day called a CRP. We have seen several cases of someone who has been dizzy for years and we cure them in just 2 minutes. It’s good when they get cured but sad that they suffered needlessly for all that time.

UK Study Models Dysmyelination of Auditory Nerve - Hearing Review

The synopsis of the article is that the hearing nerve becomes weaker as the result of untreated hearing loss. Just like your muscles, your nerved employ a "use it or lose it" approach. Everyday hearing is like exercise for your auditory nerve. Hearing loss results in less "exercise" for the hearing nerve and it becomes weaker. Dr. Ben Rodriguez predicts that future articles will show this can be prevented, alleviated, or even revered by wearing hearing aids.

The research has reportedly shown for the first time the closer links between a deficit in the myelin sheath surrounding the auditory nerve and hearing loss.
