A clinical study consisting of women aged 41 to 69 evaluated the effects of continuous rose essential oil inhalation on the brain. Participants wore a patch containing one to three drops of a 0.5% dilution of rose essential oil or water daily on their clothes for one month. Brain effects were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. Remarkably, continuous inhalation of rose essential oil increased gray matter volume in the whole brain and posterior cingulate cortex, which suggests inhaling rose oil could shield against brain atrophy and cognitive decline.

Quality sleep is a factor in an infant’s growth and brain development. A controlled clinical study found that when parents massaged their infants—aged 3 to 12 months—with diluted lavender essential oil for 10 minutes before bedtime it significantly improved infant sleep duration, reduced nighttime awakenings, and improved overall sleep quality when compared to the control group (massage with carrier oil only).

Pulmonary tuberculosis is a serious lung infection caused by bacteria characterized by a bad cough, chest pain, coughing up blood or mucus, and systemic symptoms (weight loss, fever, chills, night sweats, fatigue, or weakness). A clinical case report showed that inhalation of peppermint essential oil three times daily for three consecutive days helped people overcome inefficient airway clearance and improved respiratory function. This, along with previous research, suggests that inhaling peppermint supports efficient mucus clearance from the lungs during respiratory infections.

Approximately 95% of women enter menopause and then spend about one-third of their lives in the post-menopausal stage. Menopause causes symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep issues, reduced sexual desire, depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. A triple-blind clinical trial tested the effects of 80 mg of oral lavender essential oil (about two drops) daily for 60 days. Both the lavender and placebo groups saw significant relief in psychological, physical, vasomotor, anxiety, and depression symptoms, but only the lavender group experienced improved sexual function. This suggests that ingesting lavender oil may enhance sexual health in menopausal women.

💚 Love my peppermint oil for many reasons.

Exercise causes metabolic alterations such as the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, increased oxidative stress, and the accumulation of metabolites, which leads to muscle fatigue or soreness. Previous research showed that peppermint essential oil limits these metabolic alterations to improve exercise performance. Repeated inhalation of peppermint essential oil (16 mcL/hour for two weeks) significantly delayed time to exhaustion in exercise-trained subjects. Interestingly, subjects exposed to the same levels of peppermint that did not exercise regularly did not receive the same benefits, suggesting that the activity of peppermint is not primarily ergogenic but rather reinforces the effects of exercise training to increase physical performance.

Sleep disturbances—sleep interruption, poor sleep quality, insufficient nighttime sleep, and nighttime awakenings—-are common among pregnant woman, affecting up to 76.3% of pregnant women, and rising after eight months of gestation. A randomized clinical trial assessed the effects of inhaling lavender EO on sleep quality and fatigue among pregnant women during their third trimester. Two drops of lavender EO were added to a gauze pad and held close to the nose to inhale every night before bedtime for two months. Inhalation of lavender EO significantly improved sleep quality and fatigue, showing that it is an inexpensive and non-invasive way to improve sleep quality among pregnant women.

One of the reasons that I love essential oils to support health is that they inherently have polypharmacology because they are natural complex substances with from a dozen to hundreds of constituents that have additive, synergistic, and antagonistic (buffering) effects. In other words, each constituent in the oil serves a purpose to produce a therapeutic effect, even the minor ones. This can be demonstrated with this slide I created that shows just a few of the known receptor or enzymatic targets, pathways, and mechanisms that lavender works within the body.

Helping You get the Most out of Your Essential Oils

I have grown up and lived in the Midwest all of my life. I dream of some day living within view of the mountains. While raising my own family our favorite vacations were when we were in Colorado, Utah, Montana, and Oregon. We homeschooled our two boys through junior and senior high and are now enjoying watching them start their own families and careers. We currently have two grandsons and are waiting for the arrival of our first granddaughter.

Because of my own health and wellness journey, I am passionate about helping others learn how to use essential oils to help protect and support their own health and wellness. I also like to share money saving tips and tricks to help others get the most out of their essential oil purchases.

I first learned about and started using essential oils around 2009. At that time, I used peppermint oil to support my digestive system and my muscle system; and oregano oil to support my immune system. When my first bottle of peppermint oil ran out I could not find the brand that I had been using, so I bought a different brand. I noticed the peppermint oil just did not seem to have the same effect on me as before. I wondered, “Is it the peppermint oil, or is it the brand?”
