This , we honor the extraordinary legacy of the Freedom House Ambulance Service—trailblazers who reshaped emergency medical care and paved the way for the EMS systems we rely on today.
Founded in 1967 in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, Freedom House became the nation’s first emergency medical service to train paramedics in advanced, hospital level prehospital care. These predominantly Black paramedics—highly skilled, innovative, and deeply committed to their community—set new standards that would become the foundation of modern EMS.
Their groundbreaking work not only advanced emergency medicine but also opened doors for future generations of EMS professionals, fostering greater diversity, representation, and excellence in prehospital care, including pediatric emergency response.
Let’s continue their legacy by championing diversity, strengthening our EMS workforce, and empowering providers to deliver the best possible care to every child, everywhere.
