We’re loving our new community. Our address says Ithaca, but we’re actually in the town of Danby and yesterday we got a glimpse of just how special this place is. The Danby Resilience Community hosted a resilience fair, bringing neighbors together to connect, support one another, and work on projects that strengthen the community.

One highlight: John Rowley from the Finger Lakes Beekeeping Club talked about what happens when a hive loses its queen and a “laying worker” takes over. It’s not a good outcome for the colony but the drones those workers produce fly out into the world, carrying their genetics forward.

So glad to be part of a community that gathers like this. 🐝🐝

Another day, another with Zoey. I walked straight up the blue trail to the top of (about a 20-minute climb) then went off trail to explore on my way down. I discovered a section of the gorge that connects to a trail near the spot marked “The END,” which I hadn’t seen before. I love making new discoveries on the property. Obviously the gorge has been there a long time, so I don’t need to get pedantic about it. 😬🙃 On the way down, I followed the right fork at the bottom of the trail — I thought it led directly into the big red oak, but it comes pretty close.

Admittedly, I’ve been a little obsessed with cats and dogs lately…so I thought I would retreat to the woods today to map out some trails with my Apple Watch fitness tracker. The previous to last owners gave us this trail map. We have not run into Hugh, Tevi or the mean dog yet! I think it’s pretty cool that I can see how far I walked and how far Zoey went. I’ve wondered for years how much more she goes because she’s all over the place when we hike. Who’s up for a hike?

OK, we made a little plan. Step one: put treats out. Step two: wait. Step three: call somebody tomorrow if it doesn’t work. I still can’t believe I saw him in the tree from the kitchen. 🐈

Help! Barney the we adopted about 6–7 weeks ago is up in a tree. I was wondering where he was since he did not appear last night on the in the she shed for feeding. He doesn’t seem to be in distress. What do you think we should do? Nothing? Call the SPCA? Call the fire department?

Zoey was behaving calmly so I let her in the she shed while I was feeding the (they were outside somewhere). I’m glad she can’t get in on her own because she can totally reach the shelves…🤪🫩🙄

Week Five:
The past week, the cats have been free to roam and leave the she shed as much as they want. My jerry-rigged door solution was no good, so we got the “Door Buddy” and that works great. Zoey can’t get in the shed! 😅🙏🐕‍🦺

We also found our security camera that has been missing (I know - great security 🤪🤪) and ironically, it is shaped like a 😻cat… I say it was meant to be the CAT CAM

The Blue Trail
Yesterday, Zoey and I managed to figure out the blue trail at

It starts between the she shed and the house, where the water flows out from the woods.

Following the dry creek bed uphill, I came to a Y or fork in the trail. One side leads back to the house and the other leads to our massive red oak on the other side of the she shed.

I continued to follow the blue trail uphill to “the END,” which is at the top of the gorge.

I then turned and started following the gorge trail back towards the house and found more blue blazes! I then stumbled on some more blue trail options that led me back to the Y, and then I noticed the blazes I missed before.

So the blue trail basically is a loop with many options! How cool is that?

Week Four:
We’ve had the barn cats 🐈 🐈‍⬛🐈for a while now so it’s time for their freedom!

I’m really concerned about Zoey🐕‍🦺 though…I need a better solution to keep the door ajar but not open. She busted through my jerry-rigged solution last night and I had to drag her out.

Pardon my mini-scream at the end. 😱
