Week One with the barn cats: We’re getting to know the barn cats better. At first, I had pillows everywhere inside of the rustic plywood cabinets leftover from the renovation, kibble mixed with a can of friskies, and a covered litter box. 👎👎👎🐈🐈‍⬛🐈 Barney was sleeping in the litter box, there was 💩 all over the pillows and blankets, and the food was hardly touched.

They love it behind the wooden boxes, up against the wall, nestled behind a cardboard box of window screens. I tried putting the pillows there but they said no thanks.

So I turned the crates towards the wall and lined them with straw. This they like! They also like the dry kibble separate from the canned food. They’re using the litter box without the cover. Maybe I’ll try putting it back on. Got any advice?

We got our first farm animals today! Please help us welcome our new barn cats, Scout, Tilly, and Barney! 🐈🐈‍⬛🐈We adopted them from the Tompkins County SPCA today. They’ve had a rough winter as their previous owner perished in a fire. We will do our best here at to help them enjoy their new life with us.

We spent a few hours at Abundancia Farm (abundanciafarm.com) today learning about their Finn sheep flock 🐏🐑 and farm operations. There’s so much I don’t know and we’re really grateful for generosity of Hannah Rae, Eduardo and their family for welcoming us. I can’t wait for lambing season!

We are celebrating a huge milestone today. Bernside Bakery is officially approved as a NYS Home Processor. This brings us one step closer to sharing small batch sourdough and farm baked goods again as part of the growing One108Ithaca community.

Thinking about our future flock 🐑
…and the repair work ahead this winter to prepare.

The lower meadow (about 4 acres) connects to the upper meadow (1 acre) through a woodland corridor that links two pastures for grazing. We’re checking fences, gates, shade, and water access to see what’s needed before welcoming a small starter flock of sheep next spring.

What are we missing? Experienced shepherds please chime in 👇

🌱 One108Ithaca Field Notes: Groundswell Incubator Farm

We’re visiting farms on the Farm Freedom Trail this weekend—an initiative led by Khuba International connecting farmers of color who are growing food, reclaiming land, and rebuilding community across the Finger Lakes.

We visited Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming yesterday — a teaching and incubator farm just outside Ithaca that supports new growers with land, tools, and mentorship.

We met Erica, a beginner farmer from Peru, who’s growing potatoes and garlic on her quarter-acre plot this season. Each farmer in the program tends their own parcel and shares access to high tunnels, irrigation, compost, and wash-and-pack facilities — all while learning regenerative, chemical-free growing practices.

The Incubator Farm Program was created to lower the barriers for new farmers by providing affordable access to land and resources, especially for immigrants, refugees, and other underrepresented growers. It’s part of a broader effort to build a more diverse and resilient farming community here in the Finger Lakes.
