Berberine is a naturally occurring compound found in several plants, including goldenseal, barberry, and Oregon grape. ​Research suggests that berberine's effects on blood sugar management are comparable to some common prescription diabetes medications, such as metformin.
​How Berberine Works in the Body
​Berberine affects blood sugar and A1C through several different mechanisms at the cellular level:

​Slows Carbohydrate Breakdown: It can slow the breakdown of carbohydrates in the gut, which helps prevent sharp spikes in blood sugar after eating.

​The Impact on A1C:
​Because berberine addresses high blood sugar from multiple angles, consistent use has been shown to reduce A1C levels.
​The Numbers: Clinical trials have shown that supplementing with berberine (typically around 1,000 to 1,500 mg per day, divided into two or three doses) can reduce A1C levels by anywhere from 0.5% to over 1.0% in individuals with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
​Timeframe: Because A1C measures a two- to three-month average, it typically takes about 8 to 12 weeks of consistent supplementation to see a significant change in an A1C blood test.
