There are two types of diabetic retinopathy– nonproliferative and proliferative. Nonproliferative Retinopathy causes the blood vessels in the retina to change diameter, causing either too much or too little blood flow to the retina. Proliferative Retinopathy occurs when areas of the retina do not receive enough blood. In either of these cases, a skilled ophthalmologist can perform laser surgery to seal the blood vessels and stop their growth.

As you age, the vitreous, the clear, gel-like substance that fills the middle of your eye, begins to shrink and pull away causing the retina to wrinkle or bulge. For patients with severe macular pucker, a surgery called vitrectomy is recommended in which a retina specialist uses tiny instruments to remove the wrinkled tissue on your macula. After the tissue is gone, the macula flattens and vision slowly improves, though it usually does not return all the way to normal.

Macular degeneration, aka age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is the leading cause of vision loss. Caused by deterioration of the retina, AMD can severely impair vision. While there is no cure for macular degeneration, it can be treated with laser therapy and medications.

Diabetes can lead to a host of ocular issues including conditions like diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema (DME), cataract, and glaucoma. If you’re diabetic, it’s important to manage your blood sugar and make regular appointments with an eye care specialist.

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, but vision can be preserved through regular eye exams. Although diabetic retinopathy usually has no symptoms, some experience a sudden onset of blurred or hazy vision, floaters in the field of vision, or other abnormal patterns in the field of vision that suddenly appear.
If you or a family member suddenly experiences any of these symptoms, we have on-call doctors 24/7 to serve your vision emergencies.

March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month! If a day at the office leaves your eyes dry, red and irritated, try these eye ergonomics tips to make them more comfortable.
📌Sit about 25 inches, or arm's length, from the computer screen.
📌Reduce screen glare by using a matte screen filter if needed.
📌Take regular breaks using the “20-20-20” rule: every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds.
📌Use artificial tears to refresh your eyes when they feel dry and/or use a humidifier.
📌If a screen is much brighter than the surrounding light, your eyes have to work harder to see. Adjust your room lighting and try increasing the contrast on your screen to reduce eye strain.

-The center of vision appears distorted but the other areas of vision remain clear.
-The center of vision appears dark, white or blurry.
-The ability to perceive colors changes or diminishes.
