Ever wonder what your baby is doing with her hands at the breast? Those waving, grabbing hands do have a purpose, and not just to interfere with latching.
Remember that your baby had been comforted by those hands in utero until now. Babies have a strong sucking reflex, and sucking on their hands is one of the best ways they have of comforting themselves. It is also an early hunger cue when those hands start going to their mouth.
Massage-like hand movements of babies on the breast and ni**le area actually cause a rise in oxytocin levels and the ni**le to become erect, which facilitates a better latch. Let your baby use their hands as freely as possible and avoid swaddling at breast. They might be a little clumsy at first, but theyβll get better with practice π
Come join us at the Hispanic Heritage Festival in Downtown Jackson!
Let us stick together as moms β€
We would like to thank everybody that came out to the big latch and give a shout-out to One North Kitchen and Bar Jackson for the generous contribution of their delicious Chicken Wraps!
If youβre visiting the zoo this summer be sure to check this out!! ππΌπ
Potter Park Zoo recognizes World Breastfeeding Week by highlighting our nursing room. Our nursing room, located in the Discovery Center, provides a rocking chair, table and additional seating for other caregivers and children. For pumping mothers, there are outlets. We strive to have a clean and welcoming environment for our nursing mothers.
If you are out in the zoo you can find a few signs that point to 'quiet areas'. These are also great areas to stop and take a break to nurse!
Our nursing room is also used as a quiet room for any families that may need it.
If you have questions or need more information about any of these areas, please reach out to our Community Engagement and Inclusion Specialist, Mariah Martinez ([email protected]).

**THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WRONG TO USE A PACIFIER**
βMy baby is using me as a pacifier.β
This statement is not uncommon and it spreads like wildfire. New parents see it on social media and think, aha, thatβs what my baby is doing!
βMy baby is using meβ is the beginning of this sentence, and thatβs not a great feeling to have in our heads and hearts. This comes with the implication that they are doing something wrong or manipulative, when the reality in many of these cases is the baby is still hungry and/or the baby is in pain or distress of some kind, and seeking the comfort and familiarity of being latched and sucking.
The reality is that your baby is using your breast as a breast, and your baby uses as a pacifier as different way to meet sucking needs when they cannot be at the breast.
Are we anti-pacifier? Nope! They can be a great tool. We just want you to know your baby isnβt using you.
GREAT NEWS! More money for fruits and vegetables will continue through September benefits for WIC moms & kids. This provides an increased Cash Value Benefit (CVB) each month, through September 2022. Each eligible family member will

The CVB value is same as the last increase!
Children- $24 per month
Pregnant and non-breastfeeding postpartum people- $43 per month
Breastfeeding people- $47 per month

How long should you continue breastfeeding?
β¦however. ππΎ long. ππΌ you. ππΎ please. ππΌ
No Google search can tell you the answer to this one. Thereβs no statistic on emotional wellbeing or immunity that can predict whatβs right for your body and your baby. β€οΈβ€οΈ

How long did it take you to feel like you "got it" when it came to breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding may be natural, but it's also a skill that takes practice. Preparing before baby arrives and finding support in case you encounter problems can help you meet your breastfeeding goals.

The increase to WIC's veggie and fruit benefit from $9-$11 to $24, $43, and $47/month has changed participants' lives.
