A partnership between Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Veterans Services of the Carolinas, and the Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation recently resulted in a day-long mental health seminar at Onslow Memorial Hospital.
“Adult Mental Health First Aid,” provides knowledge and confidence to support, friends, family, coworkers and community members to identify and respond to signs of mental health challenges,” explained Jennifer Melton, Director of Su***de Prevention at Veterans Services of the Carolinas. “The program outlines effective ways to offer support and connect someone to professional help.”
The no cost, “sold out,” seminar attracted OMH employees, many of whom interact with the general public each day.
“Noticing that someone may need support is an important first step—but just as vital is knowing how to gently guide them toward the behavioral health services that can be so impactful,” commented Logan Smith Albertson, Senior Regional Liaison of Blue Cross NC. “The seminar increases the confidence of individuals faced with a tough situation, and that confidence can ultimately make a real difference in someone’s life.”
According to Thomas Giffin, Executive Director of the OMH Foundation, plans are being discussed for an additional program offered to hospital employees and, “Similar programs that could impact the community as it relates to youth mental health."
“It is clear from the overwhelming response to this first effort, if we can bring together the knowledge and expertise of the Veterans Services of the Carolinas and Blue Cross NC… combined with energy of the caring professionals in Onslow Memorial Hospital’s Education Department… programs like this can make a real impact throughout our community in the realm of mental health.”
