Officials at the Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation recently announced a $20,000 grant from the Philip L. Van Every Foundation in Charlotte. The funding will bring specialized cameras to OMH’s Level II Nursery Unit.
“When the level of medical attention necessitates the mother and her newborn being placed in separate rooms, every moment apart can weigh heavily on the family,” explained Dr. John A. Kohler, Chief Medical Officer at Onslow Memorial Hospital. “The technology will allow parents, family, and approved members of the parent’s support systems, around-the-clock, real-time access to view their newborn’s medical care."
Along with the technology’s ability to ease stress and strengthen a connection among family members, the OMH Foundation sought Van Every Foundation funding because of Onslow County’s military community.
“This technology allows military family members to remain involved and reassured, even when they have to step away,” explained Thomas Giffin, Executive Director of the OMH Foundation. “Twenty-four-hours a day and regardless of time zone differences and military responsibilities, all vested parties will be able to see their newborn baby and witness the care and support their child is receiving.”
The request for funding fell under the Van Every Foundation’s, “Healthcare and Rehabilitation,” focus area which invests, “… in programs and services that focus on medical innovation, research, education, rehabilitative care, prevention, wellness and substance abuse.”
“We are grateful to everyone associated with the Van Every Foundation, and its grant selection process,” Giffin stated. “It is extremely satisfying when a powerful idea is turned into reality thanks to a Foundation that is committed to improving the health and quality of life for individuals residing in North and South Carolina.” .vaneveryfoundation.org/
