Happy Monday! I wanted to share an excerpt from a blog post from one of my (Emily’s) personal accounts, in hopes that it may offer some encouragement:
The End is Not The End
I can tell you that nothing makes me feel more depressed than self-talk that tells me to give up hope. Nothing tightens my shoulders, shallows my breath and makes me want to run for the door or revert to avoidance behaviors more than thoughts like these.
We’ve all experienced negative emotions that stem from harmful, fearful, and anxious thoughts. How often do we stop to examine or question these narratives? Why are we so quick to believe and trust and cuddle up to unhelpful, unholy, and downright harmful thoughts?
Unchecked, irresponsible and unloving self-talk would have us believe that there are no limits to the harm that hard situations and heavy emotions can inflict upon us. It would have us believe that we are ever at the whims of a cruel world and it’s many abuses, rather than dearly loved children of God, made for His glory, and held within his sovereign care.
2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “Take hold of every thought, raised up against the knowledge of God, and place it into submission unto Christ.”
This verse speaks to the active relationship we are to have with our thoughts. We are to examine our thoughts for truthfulness, and in a sense, we are to parent them and disciple them to align with God’s truth.
Bringing awareness to our self-talk isn’t a cure-all, but it is a really effective first step in bringing order to our thoughts, and thus, our emotions. It can also serve as an effective guardrail against avoidance and other destructive behaviors.
Take hold, friends.
No one can do this for you. Others can hold you accountable, but you are the only human witness to the ongoing narrative in your mind.
If your thoughts are causing you misery and despair, I encourage you to pray, journal, talk to a counselor, do whatever you can to bring the narrative out into the light where you can see it for what it is. And, if you can notice it, you can change it! You don't have to let negative or catastrophic thoughts boss you around.
A. You always have a choice
B. There is always hope! ❤️
