Our monument recognition for the month of September, 2025 is one of the most unique monuments at Mitchell Cemetery belonging to Benjamin H. Follmer. His parents, Severine and Sarah Follmer are also buried at Mitchell Cemetery. His brother Oscar is buried locally at Paradise Cemetery and sister Geniza is buried in Hackney Cemetery. Benjamin passed away at the age of 36. He has an urn, a symbol of mourning, the body as a vessel of the soul, originating as repository for the ashes of the dead in ancient times. He belonged to a fraternity of the Freemasonry as his stone has a square and compass with the letter G at the center. The letter G stands for both God and geometry. A belief in God is the main requirement for Freemasonry membership. Many of the beliefs and symbols of the Freemason fraternity are said to have been preserved from ancient times by the masons who worked on Solomon’s temple. The square is a reminder to keep actions square and true with God and all mankind. It represents fairness, stability, balance, and having a solid foundation. The compass then deals more with the spiritual realm and the square with the earthly realm. Together, they represent both earthly and spiritual responsibilities. Sticks at the base of some monuments are often part of a symbolic representation of unity and strength. Next month we'll look at the Woodmen of the World headstones that feature sticks and logs similar to the base of Benjamin's stone. Whoever carved his stone was familiar with the WOW design.

Our monument recognition for the month of August, 2025 is the only cradle grave located at Mitchell cemetery. Cradle Graves like this have decorative curbing to outline the grave in the shape of a bed, hence these graves are known as cradle or bed graves. The empty space between the curbside is covered in a blanket of flowers that filled up the inside of the cradle giving it the full and lush appearance of a bedspread from Spring through Fall. In the winter, snow would take on the appearance of a white blanket drifting over the grave. This young man passed away in 1896 at the age of 4 years 2 months and 13 days his name was Lorin Bowers. I think his mother would be glad to know that his grave is kept up yearly

You might not think of a cemetery as being a busy place but outside of Jasper, Missouri where Mitchell Cemetery is located there is an abundance of things going on year-round at the cemetery. Mitchell Cemetery is an ideal location for a bird species named (Charadrius vociferus) or more commonly known around here as Killdeer. With the grass being cut short year round and the white limestone rock paths, it becomes an ideal location for these birds to live. They will lay a clutch of 4 to 6 eggs on the gravel pathways or near them. If you approach a nest the parents will pretend to be injured and try to lead you away. Right now they are gathering to migrate to warmer climates for the winter. They'll go to the Southern United States or Mexico and return in the Spring. I counted 16 of them yesterday at the cemetery. Unfortunately, trying to take a picture with a phone camera is rather difficult as they seemed camera shy tonight.

A fun story of new birth and Saddle flower arrangements at Mitchell cemetery. Every year people will place beautiful saddle flower arrangements at the top of many graves at Mitchell Cemetery. They are beautiful, but the saddle clips are notorious for coming loose in the high winds we have. Therefore, when they are found upon the ground they may be placed upon the wrong grave when found by someone other than the family. Nita and Clifford's arrangement had blown off and was placed upon a stone close to theirs and when discovered recently there in the arrangements is a little bird's nest with several eggs in it. I'm not a bird egg expert but I believe they belong to a "Song Thrush." Permission was given to tell this story and I'm sure Nita and Clifford would both be laughing about it. Mama bird is okay with everything.

Our monument recognition for the month of July, 2025 are the monuments with urns at the top of them. The urn is a popular symbol of mourning, particularly in historical context, often found alongside willow branches or draped with fabric to emphasize the sense of loss. Many headstones have a place where an urn once was. They are among the more fragile markers located in cemeteries.

It's nearly been a month since Memorial Day and if anyone has flowers placed in the ground they wish to keep they need to be removed within the next couple of days. The flowers in the vases may stay.

Our monument recognition for the month of June, 2025 are the markers with Bibles visible on top of the headstones with some open and some closed. A Bible on a gravestone typically signifies the deceased's religious devotion, faith, or belief in the scriptures. It can also represent the deceased connection to God, their spiritual legacy, or a message of Hope and eternal life for those left behind and it can symbolize the guidance and comfort found in scripture, particularly during times of loss.
