October was first designated as Down Syndrome Awareness Month in the 1980s and has been recognized every October since. It is a time to celebrate people with Down syndrome and make others aware of their abilities and accomplishments.

While we celebrate our friends and loved ones with DS all year long, the month of October and March 21st, are times to recognize our incredible friends!!

We are the Alexander’s Angels Youth Self-Advocate Group, a portion of Alexander’s Angels, a local organization founded in 2007 that holds the Long Island Buddy Walk annually to raise awareness of Down Syndrome. It helps self-advocates contribute to the community in projects such as The Up of Down: An Insight into the World of Down Syndrome, founded in 2007, and DOWNrightART in 2008. Founded in 2015, the Youth/Self-Advocate group consists of middle and high schoolers, as well as advocates, and although we have no regularly scheduled meetings due to the pandemic, we planned a bowling event for Friday, September 16th, before the Buddy Walk in October. Recently, we were invited by DSi to participate in a project, which many self-advocates are ambassadors for. We are set and ready to work with DSi on this fun and exciting project! Our self-advocate in the spotlight for this month is Jamie Bernstein

Jamie is co-vice president of the Alexander's Angels Youth/Self-Advocate group
and has been participating in our buddy walks as part of the "J-Team" since 2007.

Jamie is a graduate of Commack High School and she was recently accepted
into the MOST Program at Molloy College in Rockville Centre. She is an amazing advocate
and excited to be starting the MOST Program in the fall.

In her spare time, Jamie loves listening to music, hanging out with her friends, bowling and
loves expressing her creative side through her artwork.
