Most folks know turmeric as that vibrant golden root that’s warming, grounding, and spicy. The kind we have in our kitchen that comforts your belly, calms inflammation, and gives your curry that signature hue .

But there’s many other varieties of turmeric. My favorite is one of the lesser-known cousins in the turmeric family, and one I’ve come to deeply appreciate.

💙Meet blue turmeric 💙

When you cut into this rhizome, it’s not orange at all. It’s bluish-purple, almost lavender at first, then darkening as it oxidizes.

👃 What’s it smell like ?

Sharp and minty, like camphor or eucalyptus. Its energy is cooling, clearing, and direct. A different vibe entirely from the warming aroma of the more common turmeric.

✨ What makes it different?✨

Blue turmeric contains a unique set of compounds that give it its own medicinal fingerprint:
✨ Camphor – a cooling, aromatic compound that clears the lungs and fights microbes
✨ 1,8-cineole – often found in eucalyptus, it helps open up the respiratory tract
✨ Curdione & camphene – anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that also show skin-healing potential
✨ Small amounts of curcuminoids, but it’s the volatile oils that give this root its power

🌱 What it supports:
• Lung + respiratory health: traditionally used in herbal steams and saunas to ease congestion and open the breath
• Skin + wound repair: the fresh root is used in poultices for burns, boils, and cuts, helping tissue regenerate and reduce scarring
• Digestive support: especially for ulcers or belly inflammation
• Antimicrobial protection: used to help clear infections, inside and out

This isn’t your everyday kitchen turmeric. This is the one you reach for when you need to cool the system, clear the fog, and soothe muscles and joints .

I use it most often, in topical salves, or fresh paste preparations.

Have you ever come across blue turmeric before?

Very excited to begin this exploratory herbal mentorship with 🌿

I’ve found that the best way for me to learn is through engaging with a subject utilizing many modalities like reading, direct connection, relfection, and conversation. Each method deepens my understanding in its own way. Allowing me to attach information to different sensory experiences that resonate with me and allows for the knowledge to stick.

I find there’s something really impactful about learning through others, it broadens your perspective and allows wisdom to flow through a lineage of connection and experience. Knowledge shared in this way carries the imprint of someone’s dedication, care, and intention. It’s medicine in itself.

I don’t plan to share everything from this mentorship (I highly recommend you look into taking this journey yourself if you feel called), but I’ll be sharing the moments that spark wonder and remind me why I fell in love with the magic and power of plants in the first place.

Here’s to learning through connection and reflection

Not all gardens are meant to be harvested from. 🌸🌱

Some are planted as offerings, as gifts to the land that holds us, nourishes us, and gives so much of itself for us.
Since moving to the island, I’ve planted a garden in every place I’ve called home. Each one an act of gratitude for the refuge and container this aina and community has held for me.

And if those who come after me can find fruit, flowers, or healing from my labor, whether it be people, bees, or microbes, then that’s all the reason I need. 🌺

It makes me happy to see more people wanting to feel better, move better, and be more present in their bodies. The health and wellness sector is booming right now!

But here’s the truth that a lot of folks don’t want to hear:
no amount of money, supplements, or plant medicine will do the work for you.

We live in a culture obsessed with convenience. Quick fixes. Instant results. Detox teas, gummies, miracle tonics. But real wellness asks for consistency. It asks you to examine your lifestyle and daily choices. It asks you to shift how you live, breathe, eat, rest, and connect.

While plant medicine can walk with you, guide you, and support your healing, it can’t carry you. You have to choose meet them halfway, with intention, discipline, and awareness.

And remember your health and wellbeing isn’t separate from the land or the people around you. The way you tend to your body mirrors how you tend to the earth. The health of your community, the soil beneath your feet, the food you grow or consume, it’s all connected.

If your relationship to the land and your community isn’t part of your wellness journey, it’s always going to feel incomplete. Because true healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s happens in community and is rooted in reciprocity.

Disease isn’t random. It’s dis-ease within the self, a disconnection from rhythm, from place, from belonging.

So next time you see an ad promising quick results or a magic fix, pause. Breathe. Reflect.

Then ask yourself:

Am I just looking for a quick bandaid solution or am I ready to do the work to assess, clean and heal the wound in away that is going to have the most profound effect on my body, my community, and the land that sustains me?
