April 7-13 is Public Health Week! ⚕️
This week is an annual observance dedicated to highlighting the importance of public health and promoting the well-being of our community. It is also a time recognize the achievements of public health professionals and to focus on the work that remains to be done.
Public health is essential because it works to prevent health problems before they occur, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs.
So what are some public health issues concerning Hawaii?
1. Drowning - The leading cause of injury-related deaths aming visitors to Hawaii, the has the second highest resident drowning rate in the nation.
2. Cardiovascular Disease - Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Hawaii, with risk factors including obesity and physical inactivity,
3. Diabetes - The prevelance of type-2 diabetes has increased dramatically in the last few years. Major risk factors include obesity, physical inactivity, and family history. Certain ethnic groups in Hawaii experience a disproportionally high rate of diabetes.
So, how can we address these public health concerns?
- Learn to swim! Take a class on water safety and learn about ocean hazards.
- Embrace a heart healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a blanaced, nutrient rich diet.
- Get trained or revise your skills in CPR, AED, and First Aid!
This week reminds us that everyone has a role to play in creating a healthier society. During Public Health Week, let's commit to working together to improve the health of all people in Hawaii!
