Mindfulness Based Recovery from Stroke - MBRfS

The smile on Dr. Lori Gray’s face could light up the entire Western campus, but five years ago, when she suffered a stroke, it impacted everything from her ability to smile to her ability to move one side of her body. It’s finally happening! I am excited and honored to collaborate in this project.

Lori Gray, Ph.D., director of holistic health programs at WMU, received a FRACAA grant for a pilot program aimed at mindfulness-based stroke recovery. She seeks to improve engagement and emotional resiliency in stroke survivors and to strengthen long-term individual recovery efforts and outcomes. The study, launching this week, is a collaboration with a neurological institute in Kansas City, Missouri. Congratulations Dr. Gray! Learn more at http://ow.ly/OMJm50KHoHX

Acceptance is a vital as an attitude to combat stress.

A study suggests that practicing acceptance helps reduce our stress more than simple mindful awareness.

Have you noticed how challenging it can be to quiet the mind when we practice mindfulness meditation? We are never going to stop our thoughts (not the goal anyway) but we can gradually "tame" our minds. Counting our breaths is one way to slow down, notice our thoughts, and then choose how to respond. Give this 8 minute video a spin and please share your comments and questions. Remember - "Don't believe everything you think". ~Lori

The Way It Is

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.
