Parker Ranch, Inc. Home of the Paniolo™ | Est. 1847
130,000 acres on Hawai‘i Island
A landmark in U.S. ranching. Premium beef. Renowned livestock. Enduring legacy.

Parker Ranch was established in 1847 and remains one of the largest and oldest cattle ranches in the United States. In 1992, following the death of sixth generation Parker descendant Richard Palmer Kaleioku Smart, it became part of the charitable Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. PRFT’s mission is focused on the sustainability of the Waimea community, the hometown of Parker Ranch, by providing perpetual support for PRFT’s four Waimea-based beneficiaries: Queens North Hawai‘i Community Hospital, Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, Parker School Trust Corporation and the Richard Smart Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Parker Ranch, Inc., established in 1995 and wholly-owned by PRFT, continues cattle ranching and is proactively leveraging its and the trust’s extensive land and natural resources to support the trust’s beneficiaries, achieve a secure energy future, expand the sustainability of local food systems, and facilitate the general betterment of the Waimea area. As we start off this week, we are reminded the festival was dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, the last reigning King of Hawaii. Elected to the throne in 1847, Kalakaua reign saw the revitalization of Hawaiian culture, including hula which had been outlawed in the Kingdom for over 40 years.

Known as “The Merrie Monarch”, Kalakaua was regarded as a lively and spirited King. He referred to hula as the “heartbeat of the Hawaii people” and spent his lifetime helping to restore pride in the Hawaiian culture. Today the Merrie Monarch festival honors his legacy by continuing to promote and preserve Hawaiian culture and history.

As seen in the photo above, King Kalakaua (center left) was a close friend and confidant of Samuel Parker (bottom left). Also pictured are Parker’s cousins Eben Lowe (top center) and Jack Lowe (bottom right)

These videos show the damage to grasslands caused by recent mud bogging and unauthorized vehicle use in pastures.

Recently we’ve seen increased trespassing and mud bogging in our pastures, which causes significant damage to the land and the grazing areas our livestock depend on.

We ask for your help in respecting ranch boundaries and staying off private pastures. By caring for this ʻāina together, we help these lands remain productive for agriculture for generations to come.

Mahalo for your understanding and for helping us

Today we honor Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, the “People’s Prince,” whose legacy continues to shape Hawaiʻi. After the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, he actively supported Queen Lili‘uokalani, was arrested and imprisoned for his efforts to support the queen, and later went into self-imposed exile.

Returning in 1901, he served as Hawai‘i’s delegate to Congress from 1902 until 1922. A tireless advocate, he also helped create the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), giving voice to the Hawaiian community. His legacy inspires us to continue advocating for our communities and being stewards of the land.
