📣 Online First in JOPTE!

Bridging Knowledge and Application: Pain Science in PT Education with Drs. Rebecca Greenwood and Steven Lesh for the University of Charleston (West Virginia) DPT program

Study design: A longitudinal look at 99 DPT students in a hybrid program with faculty CE, integrated content, and a 2-credit standalone course.

Highlights:
✅ Knowledge climbed from 54% to 90%
✅ Students shifted from biomedical → psychosocial beliefs
✅ Confidence in pain care increased significantly

Takeaway: Pain education shouldn’t be an afterthought. When it’s woven into the curriculum AND spotlighted in a dedicated course, students graduate with stronger knowledge, confidence, and patient-centered beliefs.

📣 New in JOPTE (Sept 2025)

Changes in Self-Directed Learning Among DPT Students Across Didactic Curriculum: A Mixed-Methods Analysis

What they studied: A midwestern DPT cohort tracked across 8 semesters using the MSLQ and Short Grit scale, plus focus groups grounded in the Master Adaptive Learning framework.

Key findings:
MSLQ subscales declined from semester 1 to 6, then stabilized by semester 8
Self-efficacy recovered by semester 8
Grit stayed consistent across the program
Themes from student interviews: deep learning, habits of the heart, and vulnerability

Why it matters: DPT students may need structured support to build self-directed learning skills across the curriculum, not just early on. Findings support intentional MAL-informed coaching and resources to help students transition from coursework to clinic.

🚨 New in JOPTE! The more the merrier?

How can physical therapy programs expand access to specialized clinical placements while supporting student learning and patient outcomes?

This study applied Kern’s 6-step approach to design and implement a collaborative clinical education model in a pediatric setting—where multiple students trained under one clinical instructor.

🔑 Key Takeaways:
Increased availability of pediatric clinical placements
Enhanced student confidence, competence, and collaboration
High satisfaction among students, CIs, and caregivers
Improved patient outcomes through expanded services

The results highlight the feasibility and value of collaborative models in addressing placement shortages and preparing students for specialized practice.
