Some friendly reminders on maintaining self care from the Mayo Clinic (and Brookside Counseling) as the holiday season officially begins next week with Thanksgiving. We all know that the holidays can tend to present significant stress on our ability to maintain good self care and mental health, and this is an even truer reality during a pandemic. Here are some tips for weathering through successfully.

Asking for help is always a must should things become overwhelming or even if you just need a little bit of support to prevent that overwhelm. Remember your resources (all of them! eg., social supports, community resources, coping skills, etc.) Always remember that Brookside Counseling is one of those community resources! We’re here for you! Here’s to the happiest of holidays possible this year!

Stress and depression can ruin your holidays. Here's how to keep the joy alive.

We are SO excited to announce that Brookside Counseling will be offering a FREE and IN-PERSON support group for teachers and educators beginning next month! This has been a very challenging year for us all, each in ways specific to us, whether those challenges have been specific to our personal health needs, our social circles including both family amd friends, in various ways to our lifestyles in general, etc. Another of those sets of challenges has been those specific to our jobs/professions/careers, some more than others (such as medical professions, retail amd food services, to name a few). One of those professions most affected by challenges especially specific to their field has been in the that of education. We want to not only recognize teachers, educators, and academics for the outstanding ways they have persevered through those challenges, but we also want to provide some very much needed support for those challenges that have been specific to the field of education! If you are an educator in the area and would benefit from this kind of support, recognition and sharing of resources, this group is for you! To reserve your spot or to inquire about more information, please contact Leah Krieger, MS-LMFT at (913)912-5712 or leah@brooksidecounselors.com about this necessary and timely group, and DO SO QUICKLY!!! Registration is on at first come first served basis given that space is limited due to and based upon the current CDC’s COVID-19 restrictions. So again, be sure to reach out to Leah ASAP to reserve your spot in the group! We can’t wait to hear from you and get this exciting group started!

Hello all! As we continue to follow the changing news about this pandemic, we’ve got an update to our COVID19-related policies: Brookside Counseling will be following the mayoral order for all Kansas Citians to wear masks in public places where 6-ft. social distancing is not possible. The order goes into effect tomorrow, Monday, June 29, 2020, so beginning on this date, everyone in our building’s and suites’ common areas will be required to wear masks. Please discuss any questions about wearing masks in sessions with your individual therapist.

If you don’t have a mask or are unable to follow this order and our updated policy for any reason, please text your therapist from your car when you arrive and wait there until you are given the green light to come into the building, proceeding then directly to your therapist’s office. Another option may be to speak with your therapist about Telehealth until the mask order is lifted.

As always, our commitment to the safety of the individuals and families we work with is 100%! Stay well, everyone!

Face coverings will be required inside public places in Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas announced Friday afternoon.

Hello everyone!

As of June 1st, similar to many communities beginning to open again since COVID entered our lives, we will be slowly and cautiously increasing our time in the office. In order ensure the safety of everyone, most of us (if not all) are providing all clients the option to continue teletherapy. If you do decide to resume or continue in-person sessions, we are requesting you to follow these conditions as of today (June 1st) to help us continue to preserve the safety of everyone who comes into our suites:

1. Reschedule your appointments or return to teletherapy sessions if you are experiencing any flu-like symptoms;
2. Wash or sanitize hands immediately prior to entering our suites;
3. Wear a mask at all times in waiting/lobby areas. If you don’t have a mask, please wait in your car/outside and communicate by text to coordinate the beginning of your session;
4. Once in the suite, please use the small brown spray bottles of hand sanitizer before and after touching items in the suite (magazines, glasses/mugs, coffee/water station, etc.);
5. While in our suites, be mindful of maintaining safe distances from others including waiting outside the suite if there are too many people already waiting, preventing a safe 6-ft. distance;
6. If you have driven a loved one to their appointment, please wait in your car or outside during their session. We would like to keep the number of people in the lobby to a minimum by decreasing foot traffic and eliminating any crowding in the lobby.

Please contact us or your therapist directly if you have any questions or are not comfortable with any of the above requests. We appreciate so much your patience and cooperation to ensure the safety and well-being of all of us!

With the COVID-19 stay-at-home order put in place beginning on Tuesday March 24, 2020, mental health practitioners are considered an essential Healthcare Operation. For now, we are offering both telehealth and in person sessions at our office. We ask that clients that are in high risk health categories for COVID do not leave home but opt for Telehealth sessions instead, as well as anyone who may have been exposed to the virus, has traveled outside of the state in the last 14 days, or has any cold or flu like symptoms. We are mindfully engaged in social distancing in our offices, disinfecting heavily between clients and disinfecting our lobbies frequently. We ask that all clients wash their hands prior to entering the clinic. There are sinks in the kitchen area just outside of suite 340 and in both restrooms at either ends of the third floor hallway. Having an outlet to maintain mental health is critical during this stressful worldwide crisis. We are committed to supporting all of our clients during this difficult time and believe it is our civic duty to do what we can to flatten the curve of this pandemic. Please take this highly contagious virus seriously and take all precautions not to continue the spread. Stay well everyone!
