MCC. Giving you energy since 2019.

Last month, my dear and talented friend, , invited me to his studio to take some updated shots (he’s done every professional shot of mine since 2016!). He told me to wear simple colors with clean lines.

Ha! I told him.

Who I am, and who this brand is, is anything but normal. So playful professionalism, it is!

Hometown, meet home town.

Went for a morning run around North Manchester and it was like flipping through a scrapbook. So much of my identity is wrapped up in this place, memories from the first eighteen years of life. Mostly good memories.

In my most recent therapy sessions, I’ve been revisiting this home-the first I lived in-a lot in my mind. Dancing to Prince records in the living room, splashing in the hot tub in the sunroom, Christmas mornings in the basement. There’s also some haunting memories from this place (apart from the rumor that the house itself is haunted). Things I’m still working to understand but also grateful to know myself a little better.

No real point to this post, other than to say that identity is important and understanding your identity(ies) is an important part of burnout mitigation, and to show you a sweet home that I love.

How do you know when it’s time to quit?

When we are stuck in an unhealthy culture of work, lacking support and a sense of belonging, it can feel like our joy and zest have just…disappeared. We feel crushed under the burden of everyday life.

We wonder if we’re the only one.

During my session at the Corporate Women Rising, hosted by , we dive into the decision of leaving a job or a career we were once passionate about.

This event is free. If you feel like this resonates with where you are in your career, join us by registering at the link in bio.

This weekend, I spent some time digging in the dirt of our garden. Truth be told, my husband has more of a green thumb than I, but I can pull w**ds all day long. It was a family event, with our kiddo participating in the tending of creation alongside both his parents. Talk about a core memory.

I grew up pulling w**ds alongside my parents and grandparents, tending their gardens as well. I used to get a 5 cent allowance for every w**d I pulled (very motivating!), and while it was that financial motivation that got me involved, gardening also has incredible benefits for our physical and mental wellbeing.

Feeling stressed or anxious? 👉 Gardening will help.

Need a mood boost? 👉 Gardening will help.

Struggle with perfectionism? 👉 Gardening will help.

Low self-confidence? 👉 Gardening will help.

Lacking purpose? 👉 Gardening will help.

Struggling with poor sleep? 👉 Gardening will help.

All of these attributes impact the way you show up to work, increase your productivity, and improve your performance. You don't need to be a landscaping pro to get a little dirt on your hands - just head outside.

Let's talk about the superwoman complex.

Earlier this month, I read a story in honor of IWD about a female role model that was riddled with superwoman tropes --- she was exceptional, amazing at work, but was also an amazing mom and wife, plus she still had time to tend a perfect little garden as well!

That might sounds like generous praise, but the problem with reinforcing the "she's doing it all!" narrative is that it's harmful to all women.

For the select few who have achieved "Success with a Capital S", it erases the sacrifices they've made and glosses over the exceptional (read: not the norm) support they've had to be able to succeed.

For everyone else, it reinforces shame and guilt that somehow they aren't superhuman enough to figure success out. That they're somehow less valuable because they've placed something other than work at the top of their priorities. That they're a failure because it's overwhelming to manage a household AND a career without exceptional support.

But the most dangerous implication of reinforcing this narrative is that it allows for nothing to change, instead telling women to "be better!" in order to gain equality, rather than telling organizations to be better. Do more to provide social support for female talent on your teams.

So, I'm advocating to retire the superwoman narrative when you talk about the women in industry you admire. Acknowledge the barriers she has overcome, and work to eliminate them. Understand the sacrifices she has made and that they weren't made easily. Celebrate her for her humanness and see yourself reflected in her.
