Growing up in a large family, I vividly remember sitting between a family member’s legs as they combed, brushed, and braided my hair. I’d wince slightly while watching TV, but my younger cousins were the ones who squirmed and cried as my aunts worked through their tangles. “Tender-headed,” the women in my family would say. What Does It Mean to Be Tender-Headed? Tender-headedness refers to having a sensitive scalp that reacts to touch or tension. It’s a term most associated with little curly and coily girls, who often endure combing, brushing, and braiding as part of their routine. For tender-headed children, this process can be uncomfortable, even painful, and sadly, many mothers unknowingly brush aside their child’s cries, believing the discomfort is unavoidable. For women, simpler, low-manipulation hairstyles often become the solution.
