UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF THE NEADTA CHAPTER:

The current/soon-to-be Ex-Officio NEADTA Board members have collectively decided on the following chapter changes for the upcoming 2023-2024 fiscal year & wanted to share with our membership. Please read our official letter to the ADTA Board Members below or swipe right!

“We, the current 2021-2023 NEADTA Board are writing to the Executive Board & Leadership of the ADTA to share some significant organizational changes that we have collectively decided upon that will become effective as of Saturday July 1st 2023.

The NEADTA Board has collectively decided that between July 1st 2023 to June 30th 2024, the NEADTA will be operating at a significantly reduced capacity by the Ex-Officio Board members.

Effective immediately, we are requesting that no membership fees be accepted by the ADTA for the NEADTA for the fiscal year that runs from July 1st 2023 to June 30th 2024 as the NEADTA WILL NOT be in full operation during this fiscal year & will not be providing any programming or community offerings during this time.

Beginning July 1st 2023, the current/soon-to-be Ex-Officio Board will be transitioning to quarterly meetings within this upcoming fiscal year which will beginning September 2023 through December 2023, March 2024 & June 2024.

If ADTA members have paid or attempt to pay for NEADTA membership for this upcoming fiscal year, we are asking that the ADTA kindly reimburse these members directly as we are using this upcoming fiscal year to address the following internal chapter matters & do not have capacity to be in full operation. We also asked to be notified of these members as well.

Ethically, we are not comfortable with receiving any financial contribution from member during this time.

Please be advised that during this upcoming fiscal year, the NEADTA Ex-Officio Board will continue to assess the viability of this ADTA chapter in response to the continued low membership engagement. Additionally, if we are unable to retain new NEADTA Board leadership within this upcoming fiscal year, we will be seeking action to dissolve the ADTA chapter.

2023 DMT Graduate Highlight:
The winner of NEADTA Merch Giveaway from Antioch University

Annie Ayala

“My academic career has been very unconventional. After a lifetime of homeschooling, I began studying at my local community college. I had been a dancer since the age of 2, and a competitive dancer since the age of 9. As a teenager, I began co-teaching a class for special needs adults, and I knew then, before I even knew that dance/movement therapy was a thing , that I wanted to use dance as therapy. After community college, I earned a scholarship to SUNY Potsdam, and went on to earn my B.A. in psychology and dance. It was then that I began to search for a dance therapy program, and when I discovered Antioch, I knew that this was a place I would belong. In addition to an excellent academic program, the commitment to social justice, the attention in the curriculum to diversity, to recognizing and considering our own bias, and dedication to not only imparting the knowledge necessary to pursue our chosen careers, but the wisdom to make our world a better place, the tenacity to remain true to our values, and the recognition that life will be a constant struggle, but the results are worth far more than the price we pay. The faculty and colleagues I have met during my three years at Antioch will not only remain with me in spirit, but have formed the best part of me. I am both grateful for and honored by my experience at Antioch.”

Congratulations! Wishing you all the best for your future endeavors.

MEET NICOLE KOONTZ, MA, R-DMT (SHE/HER)

Nicole Koontz is an emerging dance/movement therapist who is currently practicing as an Expressive Clinician at Justice Resource Institute in Lexington, MA. Nicole recently graduated summa cm laude from Lesley University where she received a master’s degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Dance/Movement Therapy. Throughout her formative years, Nicole was always dancing, first with the Northeast Atlanta Ballet, and then receiving a bachelor’s in dance with a concentration in Ballet from Kennesaw State University in metro Atlanta. Nicole led the Kennesaw State University’s Dance Company as the Vice President-Elect and the President-Elect by amplifying student voices and addressing community issues. Nicole continues to utilize her leadership by providing expressive arts consultations to her clinical department in order to uphold the integrity of arts-based treatment.
