Messy eating might look chaotic, but it’s actually an important part of learning to eat! 🥄

When babies are allowed to touch, squish, smear, and explore their food, they’re building sensory familiarity. This type of sensory play helps their brains and bodies feel more comfortable with different textures, which can make feeding time much easier over time.

Instead of focusing on keeping things clean, try focusing on exploration and play. The more opportunities babies have to interact with food, the more confident they can become with eating it. The yogurt-covered hands, tray, and face are all part of the learning process. 🤍

A good latch is the foundation of comfortable and effective breastfeeding. 🤱

When a baby latches well, feeding is more efficient and it helps prevent discomfort for both baby and parent. Signs of a good latch include a wide-open mouth, baby’s chin touching the breast, and most of the ar**la in their mouth.

If feeding feels painful or baby seems frustrated during feeds, a small positioning change can make a big difference. Lactation support can help you find what works best for you and your baby.

Sometimes the simplest movements can make the biggest difference when your baby is feeling fussy.

Our OT is demonstrating three gentle ways to help calm and co-regulate your baby:
• Gentle bouncing
• Swaying back and forth
• Turning side to side

Rhythmic, repetitive movement can be very soothing for babies because it mimics the motion they experienced before birth. These movements can help support regulation, comfort, and connection between caregiver and baby.

Every baby is different, so try each movement and see which one your little one responds to best. 💛

Practicing pivoting to different toys helps your baby learn how to move around and explore their world! By placing toys just out of reach on either side, you’re encouraging them to shift weight, rotate through their trunk, and problem-solve how to get there.

💜 Why it matters:
• Pivoting is a precursor to army crawling
• Builds core and shoulder strength
• Targets visual scanning as baby looks side to side
• Encourages purposeful reaching across midline

Try rotating toys every few minutes to keep your little one engaged and motivated. Small shifts now build big movement skills later! 💪🧸

Save this for your next tummy time session!

Movement is more than just play; it’s powerful sensory input!

If your child is constantly on the move, their body might be seeking this input to feel organized and regulated.

Need ideas for safe, supportive ways to add vestibular play into your day? We’re here to help. 🌿

Getting into elevated side-lying for paced bottle feeding 🍼 Positioning matters just as much
as pacing!

To get started:
➡️ Lay baby down on a pillow or Boppy
➡️ Gently roll them into a side-lying position
➡️ Keep their head, neck, and hips aligned
➡️ Alternate sides throughout the day to help prevent flat spots on the head

This position supports regulation, coordination, and a more comfortable feeding experience

Save this for your next feeding and follow along for more therapist-approved tips!

Our OT + CLC is demonstrating elevated side-lying with paced bottle feeding. This position helps support:

🍼 better coordination of suck–swallow–breathe
🍼 improved digestion
🍼 reduced coughing, choking, and milk spillage
🍼 more responsive, cue-based feeding

By slowing the flow and honoring baby’s natural rhythm, we create a feeding experience that feels safe, regulated, and connected.

Blowing up a balloon might look simple… but it’s doing BIG work behind the scenes 🎈

At the start, you can see a moment of eye convergence (when the eyes move inward together to focus on something close). This skill supports reading, writing, and visual attention.

As she fills the balloon with air, she’s working on:
🎈Diaphragmatic breathing (using the belly, not just the chest)
🎈Breath control + endurance
🎈Oral motor strength for lips and cheeks

Play-based therapy means we build these skills in ways that feel fun, not forced 💛

Save this for an easy at-home activity that supports more than you think.

Did you know your milk naturally changes throughout a feeding?

The milk at the beginning (foremilk) is higher in lactose and protein to help hydrate and energize your baby. As the feeding continues, the milk transitions to hindmilk, which is richer in fat to support growth and satiety. 🍼

Our bodies are incredible and designed to meet baby’s needs from start to finish. If you have questions about feeding, latch, or milk supply, our lactation team at Growing By Play is here to support you every step of the way. 💚
