Podiatry's role in diabetic foot care
-Comprehensive exams: Podiatrists conduct thorough annual foot exams to screen for nerve damage (neuropathy), blood vessel damage (vasculopathy), and joint damage (arthropathy).
-Early detection: Early detection is crucial for preventing complications. Podiatrists can identify subtle changes in the foot's color, temperature, or hair growth that may signal a larger problem.
-Prevention of complications: Through regular check-ups and guidance, podiatrists help patients prevent serious issues like ulcers, infections, and even amputation by catching problems early.
-Daily self-exams: Patients with diabetes are advised to examine their own feet daily and see a podiatrist at least once a year.
-General practitioner involvement: If a patient doesn't have direct access to a podiatrist, they should ask their primary care physician to check their feet during regular visits.
