“Cardio is the type of exercise that many women believe to be key to weight loss. The reality is, however, that if your goal is long term weight loss, cardio is not the best form of exercise.”

Yes!!!! 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

If your goal is to lose weight, improve your health and longevity, shape your body or improve your overall aesthetic then strictly focusing on cardio exercises should not be your main focus.... Pick up the barbell! 💪 🏋️‍♀️

The short answer is yes, resistance training is the best form of exercise. However, it really depends on your lifestyle and fitness goals.

Even during a mass quarantine there are plenty of ways to get healthy and this is the time to do it.
I know a lot of your routines, yoga classes, and gyms are cancelled but find creative ways to boost your immunity to illness...go play outside with your kids or your dogs, do yard work, take a hike/jog and maintain social distance, eat your veggies, play tennis with a family member, clean out a closet or two and...DO A HOME WORKOUT routine. There are plenty of ways to workout in your home and if you need help/advice on what to do to stay healthy and maintain muscle endurance please pm me and I’d be happy to suggest minimal activities that have maximal effects!
I have limited space in my apartment, lost most of my income temporarily, have transitioned into homeschooling my teenager and have had ups and downs through all of this but I still managed to happily complete a workout in my kitchen using only a kettlebell and 30 min of my time.
I am praying for everyone who has been effected by Covid-19. Keep your head up guys...we will get through this!!!!

Happy Friday Everyone!

I’m taking a moment today to reflect on my fitness journey and share my personal success story with you.

5 years ago, I made a promise to myself to continue my mental, physical and spiritual growth. The photo on the left captured me in the most insecure period of my life. I had gained a lot of extra weight, didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin, was dealing with a lot of stress, felt depressed and had a ton of confidence issues with my body and my career. I wasn’t sure which direction my life was headed and I was really desperate for a change.

At the time, the only thing I felt I could really control was how I nourished my body and what I could do physically. So I began just walking/jogging a little bit everyday and participated in more yoga practice just to get active again.

Soon thereafter, I decided I wanted to shape my body more. I used the skills and knowledge acquired from my sports medicine degree to build my own workouts in my living room. It started with just simple body weight exercises, a pair of 10lb dumbbells and some meditation.

When I started making a regular practice of exercise it began to really shift my thinking but I decided I needed a bit more push, more inspiration and accountability. I reconnected with an old friend who I hadn’t seen in 16 years and hired her as my personal trainer!

Jennifer Lynn pushed me every week but she also took the time to understand what motivated me and where to build my confidence.

Those sessions became therapy for my soul!!!

She taught me how to do things outside my comfort zone like Kickboxing and Olympic lifts and listened to me complain when I for sure thought I couldn’t do another single burpee.

Those personal training sessions were incredibly life changing for me. It shifted not only my thought processes but I was seeing real physical results from my efforts. I got stronger mentally and physically, I lost weight, I shaped my body, I gave up alcohol for good, I started exercising whenever I felt sad, angry or discouraged. I started eating with mindful intention and I focused on my goals everyday and never gave up!!!

After some time went by I had an Aha moment and realized fitness was my calling and my passion. I wanted to help others and inspire them to also find this motivation within themselves....So...

I began training even harder, I learned everything I could about fitness and how to motivate others. I encouraged family and friends to workout with me and let me teach them what I had been taught. I studied to be a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I continuously study about health, fitness and nutrition every week and I learn something new everyday in this Industry. I finally started my own personal training business and partnered with Jenn to run a fitness group called Triad Miss Fits where our mission is to empower women and broken souls through fitness.

The picture on the right was taken a week ago, after a very hard workout. This realization came over me that I had actually done what I set out to do!! Through sweat and tears and perseverance I can finally say I have confidence that I never thought I would have.

Fitness has changed my life in so many ways and I am forever grateful.

I welcome anyone that is struggling with their own body or mental health to reach out to me, Jenn, or another compassionate fitness professional that wants to help you succeed and will take the time to listen to you, understand your fears and insecurities, and help you set goals. I promise you that it will be tremendously life changing and healing!

Please comment with your own personal struggles or success stories and feel free to pm me with any questions you have about fitness or our mission at Triad Miss Fits!!!

THE ONLY BAD WORKOUT IS THE ONE YOU DIDN’T DO!!!!!!!

If you are having a hard time staying motivated here are a few tips....

1. Schedule a regular workout time and just show up even when you really don’t feel like it. Getting to the gym is half the battle and more often times than less you will be ready to conquer your workout once you are there!

2. Switch up your routine and give yourself variety in your workouts to make it more fun!!

3. Bring a friend along to workout and use it as social time also.

4. Plan a post workout meal that you love and look forward to eating.

5. Set small specific goals and think about what you can achieve or accomplish in the moment right now. Continuously setting small goals for yourself will help you get to your bigger goal!

6. Set the Mood for working out. Find new music you love and feed your soul while working out or buy new workout attire that can help you feel confident and excited to wear!

7. Journal! Reflect on your goals, mantras or make a gratitude list to keep your mind healthy. A food journal can be a great way to keep yourself accountable. If you have to write it down you are less likely to eat the bad stuff!

8. Rest and Recovery is your ally!! Recovery is important so you don’t burn yourself out and for adequate muscle tissue to repair. So, take a breather when you need to.

9. Think about how you will feel after your workout. Working out reduces stress, boosts your mood, calms the mind and increases self esteem.

10. Hire a fitness coach or personal trainer to help you plan efficient workouts! Getting help from a qualified professional keeps you motivated and encouraged in a safe reliable way. Triad Miss Fit trainers want to see you succeed and will help personalize a training program just for you!

Why exercise? A few great quotes from the article below emphasize why muscle mass is important to longterm health and longevity.

To work with a fitness instructor to figure out how much protein you need and what kind of exercises can help you to build muscle mass, PM for info or visit triadmissfits.com.

"When optimizing our health and longevity, prioritizing muscle mass and muscle strength are critically important considerations. The changes that occur to our muscles as we age are profound. These changes, as we will discuss, can have dramatic effects on our health. Muscle mass starts to diminish as early as our 40’s.
___

Our muscle tissue accounts for more than 50% of our body mass. Our muscles are essential from a metabolic perspective. Loss of a highly metabolically active tissue can have dramatic consequences for adults. Muscles help us control our glucose levels, use glucose as fuel, and have a role in insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Loss of muscle mass contributes to poor health outcomes, fatigue, loss of function, disability, fall risk, frailty, and death.

___

Muscle and fat are two highly metabolic tissues. How our tissues interact with our metabolic machinery matters. Visceral or belly fat is very toxic to us, and we should seek to minimize the amount that we have. Visceral fat is responsible for considerable chronic disease states such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver (NAFLD). Muscles, on the other hand, improve our ability to manage glucose, dispose of glucose and muscles have a role in mediating the severity of insulin resistance. Exercise is prescribed to people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes to improve glucose control and their overall metabolic dysregulation."
