Today is National Maritime Day. The United States Congress, by joint resolution approved on 20 May 1933, designated 22 May of each year as "National Maritime Day". On this day, we commemorate the first transoceanic voyage under steam power in 1819 by the S.S. Savannah. On National Maritime Day, we honor the men and women who, throughout our history have served with professionalism, dedication, and patriotism in the United States Merchant Marine. We recognize these seafaring merchant mariners for helping to fuel our economy, maintain our sea power, and support our national security. Maritime Day is a time-honored tradition that recognizes the maritime industry, a bastion of prosperity and security for both the Port of Key West and the United States. Each year, American mariners facilitate the import and export of billions of dollars of goods, including fuel, agricultural product, and raw materials through the Marine Transportation System. They also are among the first to respond to help their fellow citizens in the wake of national disasters. During times of war, merchant mariners courageously sail into combat zones to provide sealift for the Department of Defense, carrying weapons and supplies to America's fighting forces. In every conflict, United States citizen mariners have answered the call to duty and risked their lives. Sadly, some have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Please remember and support those in our maritime community who are suffering right now, either from disease or loss of work.

Friends, today (Friday, 05 June 2020) marks the 100th anniversary of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (commonly referred to as the "Jones Act"). This law had two important provisions that are currently used every day in the United States. First, it created a right of seamen to sue their employers for injuries sustained during the course of their employment. Second, it restated the requirement that cargo may only be shipped between two points in the United States on a U.S.-flag vessel, owned by Americans, and built in a U.S. shipyard.

Today, there are over 650,000 people engaged in the Jones Act component of the U.S. maritime industry. This includes mariners, longshore workers, and shipyard workers.

This law has overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress because of the vital role these vessels and employees contribute to the American national defense and economic security.

During the current COVID-19 Pandemic, the maritime industry has continued to keep cargo moving to support our economy, including transporting critical medical equipment and supplies. This is similar to the support that the U.S. maritime industry has provided during wars and national emergencies.

The Propeller Club, Port of Key West, encourages you to recognize the service and sacrifice over the past century by U.S. mariners today.

Please take a moment to watch this video and then then thank our front-line maritime workers for all they have done to make America safe and strong.
